In January 1943, during the night of 22-23rd Force K, consisting of HMS Euryalus, HMS Cleopatra and four destroyers, shelled the withdrawal routes of the German-Italian panzer forces near Zuara Libya, Tripoli was evacuated by the rearguards on the 23rd.
During August, HMS Euryalus, HMS Dido and HMS Sirius with four destroyers, shelled the bridge in the Gulf of Eufemia Calibria, in support of the 8th Army under Lt-General Clarke in the Bay of Solerno, in overall command of the operation was Admiral Cunningham (R.N.) in Malta.
In august 1952 HMS Euryalus was decommissioned, and later during the year she was recommissioned and again rejoined the 1st Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean.

HMS Lively was dispatched to assist the Free French mine laying submarine, which had been damaged off Obrestad in Norway, and, unable to dive, was making her way back on the surface at 10 knots.
HMS Lively was narrowly missed by a torpedo which passed astern of her and Libeccio was slightly damaged by the return fire.
HMS Lively was damaged by fire from the Littorio, this damaged a bulkhead and resulted in her speed being reduced to 20 Knots.

He was transferred to U29 which was rammed and sunk by HMS Dreadnought with the loss of all her crew in 1915.
The weather was too bad for destroyers to be at sea and unfortunately Euryalus had to drop out due to lack of coal and weather damage to her wireless, Rear Admiral Christian had to remain with his ship rather than transfer to another ship as the weather was too bad to transfer.
Although the submarine threat at the time was not considered, even by critics of the patrol, the fact that the three ships didn't zigzag was criticised by the board of inquiry, a practice that was widely ignored at the time and even by some ships after the loss of the three cruisers.

HMS Lincoln While operating out of Singapore, in December 1962, the frigate HMS Lincoln was deployed in support of military operations with the Gurkha Sappers and Rifles, and other British military units in Brunei and Sarawak.
HMS Lincoln carried long boats on the quarter deck which were specially used along with the ships boats to run the Gurkhas up the shallow rivers.
Recommissioned in Singapore approx 1966 and crewed from HMS Lincoln, the crew was all volunteer of 17 rating, a lieutenant as CO and a midshipman.

When Euryalus was commissioned on that very warm sunny afternoon in June 1941 her compliment was approximately 346 the majority being "Hostilities Only" personnel, many of whom had never been to sea.
HMS Euryalus was a light at the end of the tunnel and it only became real after months or years on board.

HMS Kent, armoured cruiser of the Monmouth Class, launched 6th March 1901 and served in the China Station 1906 -1913.
At the outbreak of World War One she was sent to the Falklands and took part in the Battle of the Falklands, 8th December 1914, sinking the German light cruiser, Nurnberg.
HMS Kent returned in May 1915 and was sent to Vladivostok in January 1919 to support American and Japanese operations against the Bolshevik Red Army.

In November, HMS Dido, HMS Arethusa, HMS Euryalus and ten destroyers, proceeded from Alexandria to Malta with a supply convoy, despite many heavy German air attacks, the convoy of four supply ships reached Malta.
In November 1956 Dido and her sister ship HMS Cleopatra which formed the Reserve Fleet flagship group were replaced by the battleship HMS Vanguard.

My late father served on HMS Euryalus during 1940-1946, and I know that the ship was part of the 5th Cruiser Squadron sailing around Malta and also part of FORCE V. Unfortunately my father died leaving no details of his war service.
His son, John Forester, tells me that CSF visited HMS Penelope when she was being repaired at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, sailed on her trial trip after repairs, and learned at that time of the action described in The Ship.

HMS Hermes served with the Royal Navy until 1984, including participating in the Falklands War.
