  HMS Flamingo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first Flamingo was a composite screw gunvessel launched in 1876, sent to harbour service in 1893, and sold 1923.
She was laid down by the Yarrow Shipbuilding Company, at Scotstoun in Glasgow on May 26, 1938, launched on April 18, 1939, completed on November 3, 1939 and commissioned December 3, 1939.
Flamingo was sold to West Germany on January 1959, and renamed Graf Spee.

 Flamingo
Flamingos (genus Phoenicopterus monotypic in family Phoenicopteridae) are gregarious wading birds, usually 3-5 feet in height, found in both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.
Flamingos are also noted for balancing themselves on one leg while standing and feeding.
Notable exceptions are the flamingos in captivity, many of which turned a pale pink as they are not fed foods containing sufficent amounts of carotene.

It was decided to reconstruct the GNAT by using the bow of H.M.S. CRICKET, which had been damaged by aircraft off Tobruk on June 30.
With her six 4-inch guns only the Flamingo boasted an ack-ack armament worth of the name, although even these weapons were of little use against dive-bombers except in throwing up an intimidating barrage.
On 30 June 1941 the CRICKET, in company with HMS FLAMINGO, was escorting two supply ships to Tobruk when she was heavily bombed.

 HMS Bermuda
HMS Bermuda (C52 GCQP) commissioned early in 1953 sailing for the Mediterranean in March of that year in the expectation of a two-and-a-half year absence from the UK.
After a spell in Malta, one of our first tasks was to relieve HMS Gambia at Port Said where shore leave was restricted due to the unrest, and armed guards patrolled the upper deck.
We were also honoured by a visit of the Greek Royal Family who are here pictured on the left with HMS Bermuda ship's company.

In the meantime, HMS Patroclus began picking up survivors instead of participating in the fight against the U-boat and her lookouts did not see U-99 only 300 meters away.

YARRA, the sloop HMS FALMOUTH, a tug and a launch were assigned the task of overwhelming the Persian naval base where it was known that a sloop and two gunboats lay, while ashore under the able leadership of the Iranian Admiral Bayendor were approximately 1,000 men.
But it was a deceptive emptiness, for away to the south west over the concealing horizon a powerful enemy cruiser force was sweeping the Indian Ocean seeking the remnants of Allied naval power in the Dutch East Indies.

In September 1943 I joined a brand new ship called the HMS Loch Killin she was a frigate at Burntisland Kirkcaldy Scotland.
I finished my service on the battleship HMS Duke of York in the Mediterranean Sea close to Malta and then I was d-mobbed in August 1946.

The first was HMS "Indefatigable", a large fleet carrier used for training with the main hangar housing 600 trainees.
A further year was spent in the Black Swan class frigate, HMS "Flamingo" (illustrated entering Malta harbour) serving in the Persian Gulf area including India and Ceylon, a fascinating time.
This ship which is similar to HMS "Flamingo" in which I served for a year.

HMS Flamingo was the last white frigate in the Royal Navy and stationed almost permanently in the Persian Gulf.
The pictures depict the ship's company, the ships crest mounted on the bridge, and HMS Flamingo berthed alongside at Karachi.
The two pictures right and left above are interesting studies and one wonders what the photographer said that had us all so amused.
