  HMS Gibraltar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The third Gibraltar was an American 14-gun brig captured in 1779, then in turn captured by the Spanish in 1781 and renamed Salvador, then recaptured by HMS Anson in 1800.
The fourth Gibraltar was the 80-gun Spanish Fénix captured at the battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1780, used as a powder hulk in 1813 and broken up in 1836.
The fifth Gibraltar was a 101-gun screw first-rate launched in 1860, on loan as a training ship in 1872, renamed Grampian in 1889, and sold 1899.

 HMS Splendid (S106) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Splendid was launched at Barrow on October 5, 1979, by Lady Ann Eberle, wife of Admiral Sir James Eberle, then Commander-in-Chief Fleet.
Unlike HMS Conqueror, Splendid did not fire in anger, she did however provide valuable reconnaissance to the British Task Force on Argentine aircraft movements.
Her action in the Iraq War was the subject of a BBC documentary, entitled HMS Splendid, which followed the personal stories of Commander Paul Burke and his crew.

 HMS Gibraltar (1892) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Gibraltar, was an Edgar class cruiser launched in 1892 for service in the Royal Navy.
Gibraltar was armoured with steel, 3" to 5" on her decks, 6" on her casemates, 3" on her 9.2" gun shields, 2" to 7" on her ammunition hoists and 12" on her conning tower.
Despite her obsolescence she service in World War One, first with the 10th Cruiser Squadron on Northern Patrol and from 1915 as a depot ship for this group, based in the Shetland Islands.

On the 25th November 1940 Force H left Gibraltar to participate in operation ‘Collar’ - the passage of a convoy to Malta, and further naval reinforcements for the Eastern Mediterranean.
The corvette HMS Sunflower came to the rescue but because of the extremely bad weather they couldn’t get close enough to take the surviving men off what was left of the Firedrake, their skipper decided to circle the Firedrake hoping the weather would become better by daylight.

HMS Warrior was a compromise, with her centre of gravity in the middle, and consequently, problems were inevitable.
HMS Warrior also had a figurehead on the end of her bow, and along with her sister ship, HMS Black Prince and the HMS Rodney of 1888, was one of the last of the British front-rank ships to carry a figurehead.
HMS Warrior is now the only surviving iron warship in the world, and is on display in Portsmouth.

Gibraltar is in the EU as a separate European territory for whose external relations a member state is responsible.
Gibraltar is to be excluded from the new European agency for frontiers control, it was confirmed in Brussels yesterday.

HMS EAGLE having suffered damage to her aviation fuel system due to repeated near misses by bombs, was unable to participate with HMS ILLUSTRIOUS in the attack on Taranto on the 11th November.
HMS EAGLE took part in four further aircraft ferrying convoys to Malta during June and July when she transported a total of 114 Spitfires.
On return to Gibraltar, the surviving aircraft of 824 Squadron were transferred to 813 Squadron and the Squadron disbanded, personnel returning to the U.K. On the 1st October 1942, the Squadron reformed with six Fairey Swordfish and commenced work-up.

On the way back to Gibraltar, the rest of force H came by after delivering their convoy to Malta, as the ships raced by all the ships crews cheered the Firedrake.
He was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in 1926 and Lieutenant in 1928, he served in the destroyer HMS Wryneck and the Battleship HMS Ramillies in the Mediterranean before specializing in anti-submarine duties in 1931.
Then in April 1943, he took command of HMS Varbel the shore establishment for the experimental midget submarines and was involved in ‘Operation Source’ the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in Norwegian waters on the 22nd September 1943, for this he received the CBE.

Hoisting his flag on HMS Ramillies, Byng was surprised to find that nine of his thirteen ships were desperately short of men but the Admiralty refused to allow him to enlist men from the other ships in the harbour.
After a voyage marred by north-westerly gales in the Channel, Byng reached Gibraltar on 2 May. He was informed that the French army had already landed in Minorca and were laying siege to St. Philip's Fort, the last position held by the British garrison under General Blakeney.
Byng was moved from confinement on HMS Antelope to HMS Royal Anne in Portsmouth Harbour and then on to the Royal Hospital at Greenwich.

Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way.
She is depicted off Gibraltar with HMS Wolverine, the destroyer perhaps best remembered for destroying the U-47 which sunk Resolution's sister ship Royal Oak in Scapa Flow.

Richard Brathwaite was in command of HMS Gibraltar in 1766.
Brathwaite was also in command of HMS Shannon (1761-1763), HMS Gibraltar (1766-1767 in Newfoundland waters) and HMS Liverpool (1767-1768, again in Newfoundland waters).In 1790, Brathwaite became a rear admiral of the white and rose eventually to become admiral of the white in 1801.
In 1762, Charles Douglas was in charge of HMS Syren in the approaches to the Gulf of St. Lawrence when he was alerted to the French attack on St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland.

The Gibraltar Government has said that it is not opposed to the repair of HMS Tireless in a statement issued on 14 Sep. Meanwhile there has been substantial opposition to the proposal in Andalusia.
In assessing whether the carrying out of repairs to HMS Tireless posed risk to the public or the environment, the Government brief to the panel of experts invited them to compare such risks to those which Gibraltar has habitually accepted during all historical nuclear vessel visits to Gibraltar for recreational or operational purposes.
The Gibraltar Government is strenuously opposed to the establishment of Gibraltar as a nuclear vessel repair facility.

In 1896 the “Gibraltar,” commanded by Captain Harry Hughes Hallet, was one of a squadron of six ships which was specially commissioned in consequence of a congratulatory telegram from the German Emperor to President Paul Kruger on the occasion of the Repulse of Dr. Jameson’s Raid.
The Gibraltar, like her seven sisters, carried two of these powerful pieces on the upper deck fore and aft, mounted singly behind thick steel shields, both gun and shield being constructed to revolve on a turntable, and being capable of training to bear on either broadside, and ahead or astern, as may be.

HMS Renown, lead ship of a class of two 26,500-ton battlecruisers, was built at Glasgow, Scotland.
She covered minelaying operations along the Norwegian coast in early April 1940 and, on the 9th of that month, engaged the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, damaging the latter.
HMS Renown had brief post-war service in British waters and was sold for scrapping in March 1948.
