'HMS Gladiolus' corvette (925t) - On 1st July 1940 the 'Gladiolus' forced 'U 26' to the surface and was, in company with another ship and a Sunderland flying boat, instrumental in forcing the U boat's crew to scuttle their vessel.
The 'Eridge' was able to repay her debt to 'HMS Aldenham' (the ship that towed her to Alexandria) which was damaged after she ran aground, spares were taken from 'Eridge' (now classed as a hulk) to repair the 'Aldenham'.
'HMS Pakenham' destroyer (1,540t) - Took part in the action that captured the 'U 559' on 30th October 1942 (see the entry for that date in the diary) - After being damaged during battle with Italian destroyers, she was finally sunk by enemy aircraft off Sicily on 16th April 1943.

HMS Gladiolus (K34) was the first of 225 Flower class corvette corvettes built during World War II.
Gladiolus was involved in the sinking of the Type I U-boat Unterseeboot 26 on July 1, 1940.
Gladiolus was torpedoed and sunk by Unterseeboot 558 on October 17, 1941, while escorting convoy SC-48.

The RN corvette HMS Gladiolus had dropped eight depth charges damaging the U-boat in an attack yesterday.
The master, 24 crewmembers and one gunner were picked up by HMS Vansittart, which had sunk U-102 shortly after the last attack and brought the survivors to Plymouth.
HMS Calendula escorted the damaged vessel to Falmouth, where they arrived on 5 July.

 Unterseeboot 556 - Wikipedia
Just four months after Wohlfahrt had sworn to defend Bismarck, May 26, 1941, U-556 was returning from patrol, low on fuel and entirely out of torpedoes, when she was ordered to reconnoiter in the area of Bismarck's most recently reported position.
Wohlfahrt saw activity on HMS Ark Royal's flight deck, which transpired to be the launching of the second, fatal attack on Bismarck.
U-556 did not suffer any casualties to her crew during her career until June 27, 1941, when depth charges from the British corvettes HMS Nasturtium, HMS Celandine, and HMS Gladiolus sank her in the North Atlantic south-west of Iceland.

She was commissioned for service under the command of Captain C. de Bell RNR and departed from Halifax on the 15th October 1940 and docked in the Clyde on the 26th October 1940.
Although under strict orders not to stop to pick up survivors from a stricken cargo ship, because of the additional risk it represented to the entire convoy, some members of HMS BROADWATER's crew appealed to the captain to slow down and pick-up floating survivors who were screaming for their lives in the oily waters.
The corvette HMS GLADIOLUS was lost with all hands onboard when sunk by either U553 or U-568.....

The Norwegian freighter EVRIKEN and the British tanker WC TEAGLE were both hit as was the corvette HMS GLADIOLUS which was unfortunately lost with all hands.
Then nerves collapsed and the escort warships began to fire star shell indiscriminately and other illuminating means called SNOWFLAKE which blinded the lookouts, reducing their night vision, and making it consequently much easier for the U-Boat Captains to sight further targets.

Captain Francis Downer, who has died aged 79, was one of those professional officers who bore the brunt of the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War.
In 1941, Downer was first lieutenant of the Flower-class corvette Nasturtium when she and her sister ships, Gladiolus and Celandine, carried out an unusual attack on a U-boat in defence of homeward-bound convoy HX 133.
The next year he was appointed sub-lieutenant in the anti-submarine trawler Northern Pride and then served at HMS Paragon, the minesweepers' base at Hartlepool.

He was taken from the sea aboard the HMS Gardenia, and died shortly afterwards, and was buried at sea.
I would like to contact anyone from HMS Gardenia that may know anything of this.
My father served on HMS Gentian and I have been unable to find any pictures of her at all.

Between 01.28 and 02.14 hours on 17 Oct, 1941, U-558 fired torpedoes at several ships in the convoy, sinking the W.C. Teagle, Erviken and Rym and probably the HMS Gladiolus.
But it is also possible that the corvette was sunk during an attack from U-432 (Schultze) between 03.42 and 04.00 hours.
