The seventh HMS Glasgow (21) was built on the Clyde, and was a Southampton-class light cruiser, a sub-class of the Town-class, commissioned in September 1937.
On April 14, 1940, during the Norwegian Campaign in World War II Glasgow, along with HMS Sheffield and ten destroyers landed an advance force of Royal Marines at Namsos to seize and secure the wharves and approaches to the town, preparatory to the landing of a larger Allied force.
Glasgow was then employed as a convoy escort in the Mediterranean Sea and she took part in the Fleet Air Arm raid that crippled the Italian Fleet at Taranto.

The first Glasgow was a 20 gun 6th rate Scottish ship of the line, transferred to the Royal Navy in 1707, and sold in 1719.
The fourth Glasgow was a 50 gun 4th rate launched in 1814 and sold in 1829.
She was decommissioned in 2005, under a defence review, with the first of the new Type 45 destroyers, HMS Daring (D32) due to be launched in 2006.

When I flew to Malta for Suez I joined the crew of HMS Retrieve, she was ex German captured in the war, a large lifting vessel that could lift thousands of tons by cable and also ballast tanks.
I was on HMS Chevron when it and HMS Chieftain escorted President Tito of Yugoslavia as far as Gibraltar and the Home Fleet took over then as he was visiting the UK on a State visit.
I was also stationed on HMS Glasgow and other ships but cannot remember their name, but the Chevron was the best.

At least one site (http://www.btinternet.com/~a.c.walton/navy/rn-cr4.html) says that HMS Liverpool was a Gloucester Class, which was also known as the Southampton Group 2 Class.
