Glorious had taken on board some 20 RAF Hurricane and Gladiator fighters, whose pilots had taken the unprecedented step of landing on an aircraft carrier to try and save their valuable aircraft.
Both Ark Royal and Glorious were to have formed part of the escort to one of the convoys but in the early hours of the 8 June, Glorious made a signal to Vice Admiral Aircraft Carriers in Ark Royal asking permission to proceed independently to Scarpa.
Glorious was hit by Scharnhorst's third salvo at 1638, which penetrated the flight deck and exploded in the upper hanger starting a large fire which disrupted the attempts to get some aircraft airborne.

Glorious should not have been permitted to sail before Narvik W/T was sure she was aware that the use of 253 kHz had been discontinued for the Narvik area and that ships were to change frequencies upon crossing 65°N. British defensive tactics were questionable.
Glorious' zigzag scheme and her failure to have aircraft in the air indicates that she was probably more concerned with the threat of submarines than with surface raiders.

HMS Glorious and HMS Courageous were originally built as 'large light cruisers', which is a cross between 'a light cruiser with 15 inch guns' and 'a battlecruiser with almost no armor'.
The final legend design for Glorious and Courageous was submitted to the Admiralty for approval on 28 January 1915 and was approved with a few changes on 14 March.
Glorious and its two escorting destroyers, HMS Acasta and Ardent, were found by the two German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau of the Kriegsmarine.

In the early hours on 8 June 1940, five Swordfishs led the Gladiators of 263 Squadron and the Hurricanes of 46 Squadron to the carrier HMS Glorious.
Then at last the remaining seven Hurricanes made their approaches and every one was landed without undue difficulty.
At 03:00 Glorious was detached with the destroyers Ardent and Acasta to head for Scapa Flow at all speed, while the other carrier HMS Ark Royal and the rest of the fleet remained behind to escort the slower main convoy.
