  HMS Goliath (1898) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Goliath was one of the six Canopus-class battleships built by the Royal Navy in the late 19th century.
Commanded by Captain Thomas Lawrie Shelford, Goliath was part of the Allied fleet during naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign, supporting the landing at X Beach during the landing at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915.
In the immediate aftermath of the sinking of Goliath the valuable modern battleship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, was recalled from the Dardanelles.

Heard that the Goliath had been sunk by three torpedoes fired from a Turkish destroyer which had apparently drifted down stern first in the mist, and had been taken for one of our patrols.
Goliath was torpedoed by an enemy destroyer at entrance of Dardanelles at 1.29 this morning.
Re the torpedoing of the Goliath; the Majestic apparently was relieved by the Goliath and had protested against the burning of search lights as giving away her position; a protest that events have justified.

HMS Shaftsbury was moored off Grays in 1878 and was used by the London School Board as an Industrial training school at the same period as the Exmouth.
HMS Warspite was moored off Grays in 1929 but closed as a training ship in 1939.
HMS Worcester was moored off Grays in 1946 but she was never used for her original purpose as a training ship whilst in Grays.

HMS Goliath, a Canopus class battleship and part of the Chatham Division, was sunk on 13th May 1915 by Turkish torpedeo boat Muavenet off Morto Bay, Cape Helles, Gallipoli.
HM Trawler Hercules IV was a steam trawler from Fleetwood that was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in March 1915 as a minesweeper.
HMS Majestic, a Majestic Class battleship, took part in the rescue of the crew from HMS Goliath on 15th May 1915 and the Dardanelles bombardments on 26th May 1915.

The first "Goliath" - a 74 gun line of battle ship - took part in Jervis's great victory of St Vincent in 1797, where she was commanded by Sir Charles Knowles.

 The Loss of HMS Goliath at Gallipoli
The placing of the battleships on the French flank was to result in the age-old story of David and Goliath being enacted once again a story of how a small and seemingly weak opponent overcame a much larger and stronger one.
On the night of 12th -13th May the two battleships assigned for duty off the French flank were H.M.S. and H.M.S. both at anchor, with five destroyers for protection all of which remained under way.
After sinking GOLIATH the MUVANET-I-MILET escaped up the Dardanelles and made a triumphant entry into the Bosphorus on the morning of 14th May. Firle was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class, also the Austrian Iron Cross and the highest Turkish war decoration, the Order of Privilege while his officers received the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

 HMS Goliath, Zealous battle of the Nile
The Battle of the Nile, Sunset over Aboukir Bay on 1st August 1798 as ships of the Royal Navy, led by Nelson, conduct their ruthless destruction of the anchored French fleet.
To the left Saumarez's HMS Orion is moving into position on the Peuple Souvrain, while her starboard guns rake one of the French frigates inshore.
Orion, like the Goliath, Zealous and Audacious, had slipped inside the line of the unprepared French fleet, while Nelson in the Vanguard directed a further eight ships to attack the outside, resulting in one of the most decisive naval victories ever.

 Canopus Class
Canopus Class battleships of the Royal Navy included HMS Canopus built at Portsmouth, HMS Goliath built at Chatham, HMS Ocean built at Devonport, HMS Glory built at Laird, HMS Albion built at Thames and HMS Vengeance built at Vickers.
This class of ship except HMS Vengeance was built under the 1896 naval building programme (Vengeance in the1897 programme) These battleships were slightly smaller and faster than the Majestic Class and Built with the China Station role in mind.
My uncle Francis Julian was stationed in the Range Finder during the operation in the Dardanelles when together with a French warship, HMS Albion was sunk by land based torpedo fire.
