The seventh Greyhound was a 20-gun 6th rate launched in 1712 and captured by the Spanish in 1718.
The eleventh Greyhound was a 28-gun 6th rate launched in 1773 and wrecked 1780.
HMS Greyhound was attacked by enemy German Ju-87 dive bombers as she steamed with the Mediterranean Fleet against the German sea-borne invasion of Crete and sank north-west of Crete on 22 May 1941.

As a matter of fact the name was only given after 1815, when they had defeated the French Grenadiers at Waterloo; after which the bearskin of the grenadier company was adopted by the entire regiment, and the "grenade" replaced the former badge of "royal cypher and crown".
Some were at Vigo, both in 1702 and 1712; others at Gibraltar in 1704 and 1729; and at Barcelona and Almanza the Grenadiers were represented.
Also (after steel instead of wooden ramrods had been issued to them) they showed devoted bravery at St Cas, in 1758, covering the embarkation of the rest of the force with awful loss.

Crawford was aboard HMS Venerable, Admiral Duncan's flagship, when the mast was shot down with the Admiral's colours.
The lowering of an Admiral's colours meant surrender and so Crawford climbed another mast and nailed up the colours - hence the phrase nailing one's colours to the mast.
They initially lived and worked in Dunmow, Essex, and later Sussex.

He owes his life, after the sinking of HMS Cornwall in April 1942, to the moral courage of Admiral Sir James Somerville, who ordered an attempt to be made to rescue the survivors of the sinking.
In September of the same year, after surviving the sinking of the troopship Laconia, he was saved again, this time by the chivalry of a German U-Boat Captain and the Commander of an Italian submarine: Korvettenkapitan Werner Hartenstein and Lieutenant-Commander Marco Revedin.
