HMS Tireless became the centre of an intense political and environmental row in May 2000 when it had to spend 12 months in Gibraltar for repairs to its leaking reactor coolant system.
Inquiries into the previous two submarine incidents, involving HMS Triumph and HMS Trafalgar, both of which were damaged off the Scottish coast, revealed that they had been controlled at the time by trainee commanders on exercise.
When HMS Trafalgar hit rocks off the Isle of Skye in November 2002, the accident was unreported for 12 hours and the coastguard was not informed.

HMS Guardian was a World War II-era net laying and photographic ship built in 1932 and scrapped in 1962.
Guardian served in the Indian Ocean between 1941 and 1942; she took part in the invasion of Madagascar and helped build a base in the Maldives at Addu Atoll in 1942 in case Ceylon fell into Japanese hands.
In 1952, Guardian was taken out of the reserve fleet storage on the River Tamar between Devonport and Saltash and towed to Newport for a refit and modernsation which was completed in 1954 when she was put in mothballs and returned to rejoin the reserve fleet at Plymouth.

One example was working in a cramped section aboard the battleship HMS KING GEORGE V on the main deck as she fired her 14-inch guns during practice firings prior to the D-Day landings with the colossal associated vibration and shock.
Naturally there are some fine wartime photos included, one memorable picture taken being on the listing deck of the aircraft carrier HMS HERMES by wounded photographer SBLT Charles Morgan as she was about to roll-over and sink after a devastating Japanese air attack off Ceylon in 1942.
By 1935 there were about 50 ratings in the Branch and ships were beginning to be designed with specially prepared photographic facilities; the net layers HMS GUARDIAN and HMS PROTECTOR were the first to ships to include darkroom compartments.
