The yachts left Port Solent in a procession which was led out of Portsmouth Harbour by HMS Glasgow and escorted as far as Southsea Castle where the clippers detached to prepare for their race.
HMS Glasgow then took up her position south of Gilkicker Point and acted as a marker for the start of the race itself.

Campaigners want to bring HMS Plymouth back to her namesake city for use as a visitor attraction but there have been problems finding a suitable berth.
The HMS Plymouth Association is in talks about a possible berth in the city at an as yet undisclosed location after the offer of a berth at Millbay Docks was withdrawn.
HMS Plymouth was built at Devonport Dockyard and launched in July 1959.

 My Shotley & Erwarton - history
It was at Shotley Point, that the wooden ship HMS Ganges, was berthed from 1899, and used as a cadet training ship for the Royal Navy.
The mast of the HMS Ganges still stands on the now-derelict site, which is proposed to be developed in the near future.
It is the last resting place to many generations of seaman, including from HMS Gypsy, which struck a mine in the Orwell and sank.

Gypsy Markoff, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, daughter of an Egyptian mother and a Bessarabian Gypsy father sustained multiple injuries requiring no fewer than seventeen operations; her professional return was in April of 1945.
The survivors observed this attack, were later picked up by USCGC Campbell and transferred to ORP Burza, which scuttled the wreck at 1300 at 48°N/34°W and landed them in St John's on 27 February.
