HMS Hampshire was a Devonshire-class armoured cruiser of the Royal Navy.
She was constructed at the Chatham Dockyard, Kent and commissioned in 1905 at a cost of around £900,000.

The fifth Hampshire (FY173), launched in 1934, was a trawler commissioned as an anti-submarine vessel in 1939.

They were ordered to return to base and Hampshire went on a lone pitching and rolling in the Force 9 winds, but maintaining a speed of 13.5 knots.
When she was about one and a half miles offshore between Marwick Head and the Brough of Birsay a rumbling explosion shook the whole ship tearing a huge hole in her keel between her bridge and her bow.
The wreck of HMS Hampshire now lies in 70 metres, upside down and largely intact bar the bow section which has been devastated by the mine explosion and the more recent attention of salvors.

HMS Antrim was put into reserve at the Nore in 1919 but was refitted as a wireless and Asdic trials ship and recommissioned in March 1920.
HMS Argyll was commissioned for the 1st Cruiser Squadron of the Channel Fleet in 1906 but joined the 5th Cruiser Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet in 1909.
HMS Carnarvon served with the Mediterranean Fleet in the 3rd Cruiser Squadron until March 1907 three months after this she was recommissioned and joined the 2nd Cruiser Squadron in the Atlantic Fleet.

LOSS OF The armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire was built by Armstrong at Elswick, and launched on 24th September 1903 and joined the Channel Fleet when she was completed on 15th July 1905.
In 1911 she served in the Mediterranean and then at the China station from 1912 to 1914.In 1915 she was ordered to Scapa Flow to join The Grand Fleet and undertake patrol duties.
At 19.40hrs, when the Hampshire was only one and a half miles from shore between the Brough of Birsay and Marwick Head, there was an explosion which tore out the centre of the ship, and within fifteen minutes she sank with almost her entire company.

The Chief who I think was in fact the OOW aboard HMS Shoreham was a disgrace and the side party (one bosuns mate) for the Second Sea Lord did seem to be a rather poor show for such a senior officer.
The fact that Shoreham was flying a masthead pennant as well as the Vice Admiral's flag must also have had the many ex Ganges signalmen present groaning in their boots but this is a different Navy from the one the majority of us served in.
