HEBE was refitted in March/April 1938 and she then commissioned for service and started work in the Channel with visits to south coast ports.
On the 16th HEBE was holed on the port side 8ft above the keel and the starboard propeller damaged by 'mine or torpedo' off Malta.
HEBE became a victim of a mine off Bari on 22 November 1943 and she sank with the loss of 38 of her company.

HMS UNICORN was designed as one of the last of the successful Leda class frigates, 150 feet long in the hull and armed with 46 guns.
Their lines were based on a French frigate, the HEBE, captured in 1782, and the whole class was one of the best of the age.
Captain Stewart started a move to ensure her permanent preservation, and the outcome was the formation, in 1968, of the Unicorn Preservation Society, chaired by Lord Dalhousie, with the exciting aim of preserving UNICORN for posterity.

All doubts about the effectiveness of carronades were dispelled in 1782, when HMS 'Rainbow' engaged the large French frigate 'Hebe', forcing her to strike her colours after a single broadside.
The first commanding officer of HMS 'Glatton' was Captain Henry Trollope (20.04.1756-02.11.1839) a veteran of the American War of Independence and a strong supporter of the use of carronades.
In 1830, HMS 'Glatton' was sunk as a breakwater.

One hour after daylight a searching plane noticed a fl object sticking out of the waterand finally confirmed that HMS Thetis had been found, the time was 0745, 18 hours since her dive and at the estimated limit that men could survive.
A memorial service was held at sea aboard HMS Hebe for the families and collegues of those lost.
Hebe was joined at the site of the disaster by a congregation of salvage vessels, lifeboats and various other craft all paying their respects.

In November 1873 UNICORN sailed for Dundee in tow of HM Paddle Sloop SALAMANDER and on her arrival she replaced HMS BRILLIANT, which was taken to Inverness and later renamed HMS BRITON.
In 1941 she became HMS CRESSSY when it was found that having two UNICORNs in the navy caused confusion with mail and drafting.

Approved in 1794, between 1800 and 1830 47 frigates were built from the pattern set by Hebe, known as the Leda-class from the first vessel of the type as was traditional.
The name was taken from Greek mythology, as was common at the time, from that of a woman seduced by Zeus while he was masquerading as a swan.

Our decision to set HMS Pinafore in a period slightly earlier than its first performance arises from a feeling I have always held that it is a rather different piece from the partnership’s later successes.
Our shortened version of HMS Pinafore was first commissioned by the Concordia Theatre Company for performance aboard the QE2 in 1987.
David Timson and Ian Belsey (Admiral and Captain) exactly captured the essence of their roles; Joseph Shovelton and Louise Crane (Ralph and Buttercup) were also admirable and in good voice and Graham Hoadly and Martin George (Deadeye and Bosun) were agreeably juicy and eccentric characters, the former also appearing as Sir Joseph’s aunt.
