but there were two carriers called HMS Hermes; it looks to me like the picture is of Hermes (R12), the later vessel.
If you look carefully at the picture, it has an angled flight deck (the bit sticking out on the right); the picture of the sinking doesn't have this, and the angled deck was a late-war development.
