HMS Ganges Royal Navy Association - Bill Ethel
As the youth of Europe were preparing for their attempt at tearing down the walls of the establishment, involving erecting barricades in Paris, battling police in Trafalgar Square and blowing up Northern Ireland, I along with almost one thousand other boys stared vacantly at a brick wall with a poem painted on it.
It has been said that HMS Ganges was possessed of a reputation in the navy that brought to the Shotley peninsula (on which Ganges stood), a depth of infamy, as a geographical hell hole, touched on only lightly by Devils Island and the Gulag Archipelago.
They are as heroic and as flawed as my first skipper and those other Ganges heroes I had been encouraged to emulate as a very impressionable 15-year-old boy.

 "Navy Cut" cigarettes and HERO
This was a combination of two earlier trademarks - the lifering bearing the words "Player's Navy Cut" dating from 1888 and the bearded sailor - originally an artist's conception for a campaign registered around 1891 for the "Jack Glory" brand by William Parkins & Co of Chester.
Of the two ships in the background, there is little doubt that the one to the left of the sailor is HMS BRITANNIA; to the right, there is a continuing discussion as to whether this is HMS DREADNOUGHT or HMS HERO - the former being more likely.
The two oddities of the original trademark are the missing "HMS" before "HERO" on the capband, and the two stripes on the collar (the RN uses three, and the original, pre-trademark campaign only showed a single stripe).

Synopsis : HMS Hero enters a North African port on a courtesy visit, and becomes the centre of a political intrigue that shakes the very structure of the balance of Middle East power.
The series took as its central premise the lives and duties of those serving on board HMS Hero (actually real-life frigate HMS Phoebe) and was designed to reflect the changing nature of the British Navy in the early 1970s.
HMS Hero was captained by three different (and often radically so) officers throughout the life of the series: Donald Burton as Commander Mark Nialls (in the first two seasons), Bryan Marshall as Commander Glenn (for the third series) and Derek Godfrey as Commander Edward Kelvin Holt (in the fourth and final season).
