HMS Hesperus (H57) was an H-class destroyer of the Royal Navy.
She was originally laid down as Juruena for the Brazilian Navy by John I. Thornycroft and Company at Woolston in Southampton on 6 July 1938, launched on 1 August 1939, purchased in September 1939 and named Hearty.
Hesperus was sold for scrap on 26 November 1946 and broken up at Grangemouth.

On 25 October 1941, Hesperus and the destroyers HMS Electra and HMS Express escorted the battleship HMS Prince of Wales for the first part of her journey to the Far East.
Two days later the destroyer, HMS Legion was detached from a convoy to cover the Prince of Wales with Hesperus while Electra and Express refuelled from a tanker in Ponta del Garda in the Azores.

It was part of the B2 escort group, under the control of the group leader "Hesperus", which was a destroyer commanded by Cmdr D. McKintyre, a fearless man with a flowing red beard and, at that time, the youngest and most decorated commander in the Royal Navy.
Hesperus did manage to get a U-Boat and after that, it quietened down and we all carried on doing our business in great waters.
The dancing guns had been chocked and made more or less secure, and we prayed that the weather, comprising of tempest, tornado and typhoon, all encapsulated, had settled down a bit, which although it wasn't good, it was certainly better than the previous four weeks.

On Monday, 20 October1941, the crew of Electra got word that they, along with HMS Express would be escorting HMS Prince of Wales to the Far East under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir Tom Phillips where the ships would form the nucleus of a new Eastern Fleet intended to deter Japanese aggression.
Two days later, another destroyer, HMS Legion, was detached from a Gibraltar convoy to cover the Prince of Wales while Electra and Express refueled again from a tanker in Ponta del Garda in the Azores.

Her distress messages brought the armed merchant cruisers HMS Laurentic (F 51) (Capt E.P. Vivian) and HMS Patroclus to the scene and the U-boat began a dramatic battle at 22.50 hours when the first torpedo struck the HMS Laurentic (F 51) from a distance of 1500 metres.
In the meantime, HMS Patroclus began picking up survivors instead of participating in the fight against the U-boat and her lookouts did not see U-99 only 300 metres away.
After that, U-99 was heavy attacked by the British destroyer HMS Hesperus (H 57) (LtCdr D.G.F.W. Macintyre) with depth charges, but the destroyer soon left the U-boat to pick up the survivors.
