She was originally laid down as Juruena for the Brazilian Navy by John I. Thornycroft and Company at Woolston in Southampton on 6 July 1938, launched on 1 August 1939, purchased in September 1939 and named Hearty.
Commissioned on 22 January 1940, Hearty was renamed Hesperus on 27 February, after the Hesperus of mythology.
Hesperus was sold for scrap on 26 November 1946 and broken up at Grangemouth.

HMS Grenade (H86) was a G-class destroyer of the Royal Navy laid down by Alexander Stephen and Sons at Linthouse in Scotland on 3 October 1934, launched on 12 November 1935 and completed on 28 March 1936.
Grenade was attacked by German Ju-87 dive bombers as she evacuated Allied troops from Dunkirk and sank in the English Channel on 29 May 1940.

On 23 October 1941, Force G (later re-designated Force Z when it reached the Far East) sailed out of Scapa Flow for Greenock, and on 25 October, they sailed for the Far East.
This force consisted of the battleship HMS ''Prince Of Wales'' and the destroyers HMS ''Electra'' and HMS ''Express''.
Two days later, another destroyer, HMS ''Legion'', was detached from a convoy to cover the ''Prince Of Wales'' while ''Electra'' and ''Express'' refueled again from a tanker in Ponta del Garda in the Azores.

HMS Hesperus (H57) war ein Zerstörer der H-Klasse der britischen Royal Navy im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
HMS Hesperus diente danach als Führungsschiff einer der neu gebildeten Geleitgruppen, die aus wenigen, meist älteren Zerstörern und mehreren Korvetten, später dann auch teilweise einer Fregatte, bestanden.
Erste Erfolge gelangen HMS Hesperus noch während der Zeit, als er mit der Force H in Gibraltar stationiert war.
