The first HMS Hood, 80 was an Edgar class warship commissioned in 1859.
The second HMS Hood was a Royal Sovereign class battleship built at Chatham, England and commisioned in 1891.
She was given a refit in 1930 and was due to be scrapped in 1941.

HMS Hood, the ‘Mighty Hood’ as she was popularly known in the Royal Navy, was the largest warship in the world when she was commissioned in 1920 and became a symbol of British Naval strength in the inter-war years.
Hood was due a for major refit in 1939, including the removal of the 600-ton conning tower and improvements to her deck armour, but with too few capital ships available she could not be spared.

At 7.22pm on 23rd May, the cruiser HMS Suffolk sighted the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen seven miles ahead of it in the Denmark Strait.
The Prince of Wales sent the signal ‘Hood sunk’ which was received by the destroyer HMS Electra at 0600, and she and the rest of the escort instantly went in search for survivors.
HMS Prince of Wales had to withdraw under cover of smoke after being damaged, but was able to continue to shadow the German ship.

In July 1940, HMS Hood was part of Force H, a battle group that did what the Royal Navy had dreamed of doing a few hundred years earlier - sailed within gun range of key French ports and destroyed the French Navy at anchor.

Hood's frames stations in British terminology were spaced about 640mm (25.32 in) apart on average, so this point was about 175m (580 ft) aft of the bow, i.e., just aft of the after fire control tower.
