The first HMS Hood, 80 was an Edgar class warship commissioned in 1859.
The second HMS Hood was a Royal Sovereign class battleship built at Chatham, England and commisioned in 1891.
She was given a refit in 1930 and was due to be scrapped in 1941.

HMS Captain was a British turret ironclad of 6950 tons displacement built in 1869 and lost in 1870 when it capsized off Finisterre.
Like HMS Courageous, HMS Glorious was completed in 1917 as a fast cruiser for use in the Great War in the Baltic, but by the 1920s with Britain wanting to increase her aircraft carrier strength she was converted to an aircraft carrier, as was HMS Courageous.
HMS Wasp was a British steam gunboat, which was lost in September 1887 while on a passage from Singapore to Hong-Kong.

The usual starting point for a dive on the Hood is a buoy outside the harbour entrance, a little to the south.
Perhaps the Hood didn't deserve that epitaph, but since her launch in 1891, the 14,150 ton armoured monster had become known throughout the fleet as a good looker, but a lousy sailer.
This extra weight lowered her freeboard so that she needed dead calm to proceed at speed, otherwise great green seas came aboard and the whole ship was covered in clouds of spray, making gunnery impossible.

Hood [12 Dec 1724 – 27 Jan 1816] served under Sir George Rodney [bap.13 Feb 1718 – 24 May 1792] in the West Indies and as commander of the rear squadron at the Battle of the Saints, 1782, he received the surrender of the French Admiral de Grasse [13 Sep 1722 – 11 Jan 1788].
The battlecruiser HMS Hood was the largest warship in the world when it was commissioned in 1920 in memory of Admiral Hood, and it became sadly famous for being destroyed by the German battleship Bismarck on 24 May 1941.
At an advanced age, in 1780, he was Captain of the Gibraltar, 80 guns, under Sir Samuel Hood and was present at Rodney's capture of Saint-Eustatius in the West Indies from the Dutch in 1781.

During the ensuing battle, the lighter armour of the battle cruiser Hood proved to be its downfall.
