Charles Darwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As HMS Beagle surveyed the coasts of South America, Darwin began to theorise about the wonders of nature around him.
He attended a Church of England school, then at Cambridge studied Anglican theology to become a clergyman and was fully convinced by William Paley's teleological argument that design in nature proved the existence of God.
In the twentieth century, eugenics movements gained popularity in a number of countries and became associated with reproduction control programmes such as compulsory sterilisation laws, then were stigmatised after their usage in the rhetoric of Nazi Germany in its goals of genetic "purity".

 Wolverine
Just such a hero was Commander Lewis M Mortlock who, in command of HM brig-sloop Wolverine, 13 guns, 286 tons, gave his life for his country in most gallant circumstances.
It is a tribute to a natural seaman that Mortlock achieved so much by working cleverly within his vessel’s limitations and thereby getting more out of her than another might have done, in spite of his having been several years on the beach.
The Channel engagement was the equivalent of front-page news in its day and the subject of popular prints; there is one delightfully primitive engraving by Charles Turner from a sketch by Masquerier showing Mortlock skewering his frog the while his dog leaps supportively beside him.

Cricket - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
Batsmen come in to bat in a batting order, which is determined by the team captain.
The first two positions, known as "openers", are generally a specialised position, as they face the most hostile bowling (the opposing team's fast bowlers are at their freshest and the ball is new).
It was recorded that cricket was played when Captain James Cook landed on the north shore of Australia, during his tour of discovery on the HMS Endeavour.

 Overview of Belizean History
As can be seen in the references to shipwrecks, and bearing in mind the incessant conflict between Spain and England, hostilities and the reefs off Belize obviously took their toll in lives and ships.
Although logwood and other timbers were valuable, it is quite likely that one of the reasons the Spaniards did not want the English settling in the area, was because, with an English foothold, noted pirates such as Morgan, Drake and Hawkins could prey on the Spanish treasure fleets sailing from Honduras and Guatemala.
Crews surviving a shipwreck, still had to face the elements and, at times, hostile Indians, who by this time had learned that the Europeans did not have their best interests at heart.

Collected Works of F.V. Dickins - Introduction
From 5 January 1863 he was employed on HMS Coromandel, the tender for the Euryalus, and it was in this year that it seems he first set foot in Japan.
According to the court report this man, ‘wishing to escape the cruelty he alleges he suffered jumped overboard, to swim ashore’, and was rescued by the British naval vessel, HMS Iron Duke, where he ‘prayed for security’ and claimed that the Chinese labourers were being held against their will and in inhuman conditions.
He evidently had a high regard for Parkes, but the details of their relationship are wanting and in his admiration Dickins found himself at odds with Satow, who wrote that he did not agree with him on the matter of the ‘great qualities of my revered chief’.

Casualties: U. S. Navy and Marine Corps
Casualties in Cambodia in 1968 to 1975, as well as those in Vietnam in 1975 are also included with Vietnam War totals.
Hostile incidents causing casualties during Operation Enduring Freedom (War on Terrorism) occuring outside of Afghanistan are listed separately though presumably included in the totals.
