At various dates the “Hyacinth,” while commanded by Captain J.D Dick and flying the flag of Rear-Admiral E.J.W. Slade, was employed in the prevention of the gun-running traffic in the Persian Gulf.

A contemporary full hull model of the 'Hyacinth' (1829), a ship rigged sloop 18-gun sixth-rate, built plank on frame and sailor made.
Model is decked, equipped and rigged with three masts and flying a white ensign from the peak of the gaff.
Launched at Plymouth in 1829, the `Hyacinth’ measured 109 feet along the gun deck by 30 feet in the beam, and it had a tonnage of 435 burden.

Not long after arriving on Pitcairn, young Roy became friendly with Hyacinth May Coffin, the daughter of Philip Coffin who had been a shipmate of Roy’s father, Lincoln.

HMS PIONEER was commissioned by the Royal Navy on 10 July 1900.
The East African coastline was for the purposes of operations, divided into three sections and PIONEER was allotted in charge of the northern most area from north of Tanga past the island of Zanzibar to a point just south of Dar-es-Salaam, with the armed steamer DUPLEX and the whaler PICKLE.
The attack began on 6 July 1915 and while HYACINTH and PIONEER bombarded the area of the main (Simba Uranga) mouth of the river, the monitors steamed up the northern (Kikunya) arm, anchored and began firing alternate salvoes.
