The fifth HMS Illustrious (R06) is an Invincible-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, affectionately known as 'Lusty' to her crew.
After the RAF airfield was repaired, Illustrious returned to the UK for a more proper shakedown cruise and workup period, with a formal commissioning on 20 March 1983.
Illustrious remained in theatre while other elements of the task force returned to the United Kingdom to refit.

HMS Illustrious spent only six months in the Mediterranean, but her involvement in that short space of time was to have far-reaching consequences, both locally and halfway around the world.
Illustrious was part of a convoy escort, along with the battleships Warspite and Valiant and a screen of five destroyers, bound for Malta and Greece, when the carrier was attacked at 12.20 by two Italian SM79 torpedo-bombers north-west of Malta.
Illustrious turned into the wind and launched four more fighters, which had been due to relieve her CAP at 12.35 in any case, but too late; the Ju87s began their attack at 12.38 from 12,000 feet without fighter opposition, thirty concentrating on the carrier and ten attacking the two battleships.

HMS Ark Royal was similarly modified as per her sister ships, but is also the first of the class to be given the capability to operate the new Merlin HM.1 helicopter and carry the updated Sea King AEW.7 rather than the AEW.2.

HMS Illustrious was built by Vickers Armstrong, Barrow, laid down on 27 April 1937 and launched 5 April 1939.
HMS Illustrious was heavily damaged by a concerted enemy air attack by German dive-bombers on 10 January 1941, when the armoured flight deck armour was penetrated by an 1100lb (500kg) bomb.

At present Illustrious is the active carrier, Ark Royal is in a major refit at Rosyth and Invincible is undergoing maintenance at Portsmouth.
In February 1982 it was announced that Invincible was to be sold to Australia where she would replace the aging Melbourne as the flagship of the R.A.N. However, a few months later Invincible sailed together with the larger carrier Hermes to the Falklands.
H.M.S Illustrious was completed ahead of schedule by her builders, Swan Hunter, in order to sail South for the Falklands Conflict in 1982.
