The fourth HMS Illustrious (R87) of the Royal Navy was an aircraft carrier, seeing service in World War II.
The namesake of a new class of carriers which included, in addition to the Illustrious, the Victorious, the Formidable and the Indomitable, Illustrious was built by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness, launched in 1939, and commissioned in May 1940.
On 11 November 1940, it became the first carrier in history to launch a major strike against an enemy fleet in a daring attack against the Italian fleet at Taranto.

HMS Illustrious was built by Vickers Armstrong, Barrow, laid down on 27 April 1937 and launched 5 April 1939.
As 5000 tons of armour had to be worked into a treaty limit of 23,000 tons, Illustrious was consequently considerably shorter than Ark Royal, and because the flight deck armour weighed 1500 tons, the second hangar deck was omitted to reduce the freeboard by 22 feet and preserve stability.

Illustrious was part of a convoy escort, along with the battleships Warspite and Valiant and a screen of five destroyers, bound for Malta and Greece, when the carrier was attacked at 12.20 by two Italian SM79 torpedo-bombers north-west of Malta.
Illustrious turned into the wind and launched four more fighters, which had been due to relieve her CAP at 12.35 in any case, but too late; the Ju87s began their attack at 12.38 from 12,000 feet without fighter opposition, thirty concentrating on the carrier and ten attacking the two battleships.

In 1940, anxious to decrease the number of "backdoors" it had to watch, Britain gathered a rather motley collection of colonial infantry, half-trained air units armed with obsolete equipment (including South African Air Force Ju-86 bombers!), and a few armored cars, and invaded the Italian holdings in East Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Italian Somaliland).
Illustrious did not sink, but managed to escape to America, where she was repaired and returned to combat 18 months later.
In March and April, 1940, a civilized (demilitarized) Hudson bomber (basically, a Lockheed Super Electra 14 with civilian registration) was sent on photo recon missions 20,000 ft over Iraq to the Batum area.
