The second HMS Illustrious was launched at Rotherhithe in 1803 and was like her predecessor a 74-gun Third-rate.
The third Illustrious was a Majestic-class pre-dreadnought, launched in 1896 and scrapped in 1920.
The fourth Illustrious (R87) was an aircraft carrier commissioned in 1940, the year she became the first carrier to strike against an enemy fleet, and in service until 1954.

The fifth HMS Illustrious (R06) is an Invincible-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, affectionately known as 'Lusty' to her crew.
It turned out that no deployment was made before Illustrious was relieved by HMS Ocean (L12) in early 2002, but the ship had made a valuable contribution to British options in the conflict, providing a launching point for ground forces, had they been needed.
HMS Illustrious is currently located in the Mediterranean operating from Gibraltar.

HMS Ocean, with a hull form based on the Invincible class design, was commissioned in 1998 for this role.
Illustrious carried the first examples of the type when it was rushed south in the aftermath of the Falklands to relieve Invincible of its guard duty around the islands.
Illustrious has taken over as the Flagship and is planned to decommission in 2012, and Ark Royal in 2015, as two new, much larger future Royal Navy carriers are brought into service.

HMS Ark Royal (R07), the last Invincible-class light aircraft carrier, is the current flagship of the Royal Navy.
Her name was originally intended to be Indomitable to be similar with her sister ships (HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious), but public resentment at the scrapping of the previous Ark Royal (Britain's last large aircraft carrier) in 1980, led the Royal Navy to announce that her name would be revived on the new ship.
Ark Royal is slightly larger than her sister ships and during construction she was fitted with a steeper ski-jump ramp, (twelve degrees, as opposed to seven degrees of the Invincible) to improve STOVL take-off performance for the Harrier aircraft.
