HMS Firedrake, an 'F' class Destroyer, was ordered under the 1932 program on the 17th March 1933.
Laid down on the 5th July 1933, the HMS Firedrake was launched on 28th June 1934, by Mrs Blake, wife of Rear Admiral Geoffrey Blake DSO, the Fourth Sea Lord.
On the 25th March, together HM ships Icarus and Impulsive, the Firedrake was sent to search for the U-boat responsible for sinking the tanker Daghestan, on passage from Scapa to Sullum Voe, five miles north-east of the Pentland Skerries earlier that day, but without success.

 HMS Impulsive (D11) Information
HMS Impulsive (D11) was an I-class destroyer laid down by J. Samuel White and Company, Limited, at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in March 1936, launched on 1 March 1937 and commissioned on 29 January 1938.
Impulsive attacked and sank the enemy German submarine U-457 in the Barents Sea north-east of Murmansk in Russia on 16 September 1942.
Impulsive was sold for scrap to W. Arnott, Young and Company, Limited on 22 January 1946 and broken up at Sunderland.

 HMS Onslow
In 1942, HMS Onslow is transferred to the Mediteranean where she takes part as an escort for convoy supplying Malta.
In September, together with HMS Faulknor and HMS Impulsive, she sinks three U-boots, and in cooperation with the Swordfish plane from HMS Avenger, she sinks another U-boot.
HMS Onslow participated also in the Battle of the North Cape resulting in sinking of the Scharnhorst, and in Normandy landings in 1944.

HMS Imogen and HMS Icarus sailed from Sullom Voe at 11:40 on Nov. 14-1939 in order to meet up with Convoy ON 2, while HMS Impulsive departed at 13:10 that same day, with orders to rendezvous with HMS Imogen off Hovden Channel at 10:00 on Nov. 15.
At 17:30 HMS Impulsive proceeded to search for a flying boat, which had been reported lost, but upon having been informed that the crew had been recovered, she abandoned this search.
W/T silence was broken and the position and action taken reported to HMS Cairo, before Impulsive closed the remainder of the stragglers and set them on the rigth course to catch up with the convoy, which was sighted at 09:35, and by dusk all the ships had rejoined.

The minelayers were from the 20th Destroyer Flotilla and consisted of the destroyers HMS Express, HMS Esk, HMS Icarus, HMS Intrepid and HMS Ivanhoe.
The minelayers were escorted by members of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla consisted of the destroyers HMS Kelvin, HMS Jupiter and HMS Vortigern.
HMS Express struck a mine and was badly damaged, HMS Esk went to her assistance and hit mine and sank immediately, HMS Ivanhoe also went to her assistance and hit a mine and was badly damaged, so much so she she had to be sunk by HMS Kelvin.

Towards the end of the 18th century and the start of the 19th, the time in which these stories are set, warships had become beautiful, incredibly complex and deadly floating castles.
HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar (commissioned in 1776, it is the oldest warship still in service, and is permanently docked at Portsmouth, Hampshire) was over 200 feet tall from the waterline to the top of the main-mast and mounted 104 guns on three decks.
As a result of this action Cochrane was promoted to Post Captain.The story of Cochrane and HMS Speedy formed a large part of the plot of Patrick O’Brian’s novel ‘Master and Commander’, which was recently made into a film starring Russell Crowe.
