They subsequently launched strikes on the Nicobar Islands, but they soon parted, and Indomitable joined up with Illustrious for air strikes against Medan and once more against Sumatra on the 20th December.

Embarked in HMS Ark Royal (R09) from Nov 1961 and during 1964 on HMS Centaur (R06), it provided support against disturbances in Aden (with 45 Royal Marine Commando from May 1964 in the Radfan) and in Tanganyika (now Tanzania).
On 31 Oct 2001, the unit formally disbanded by becoming HMS Gannet SAR Flight of 771 Squadron, although the presence of the SAR Flight airframes continued at Prestwick.
It disembarked from HMS Tiger for the last time in Apr 1978 and was re-assigned to HMS Bulwark (R08) in Feb 1979 as she was completing a refit.

1 of the 6 Sikorsky S-51s imported by Westland was taken on by the RN for trials on board HMS Vengenance (R71) in early 1949, while the development programme continued.
The Dragonfly replaced the Sea Otter in the SAR role and it also served as a plane guard, during fixed wing carrier operations (replacing a Destroyer and around 250 men) recovering the crew in case of deck accidents.
RNAS Lossiemouth (HMS Fulmar) was the 1st shore station to equip its SAR Flight with Dragonfly in Mar 1953.
