The new batch comprises: HMS Kent which was launched in May 1998 and entered service in September 2000; HMS Portland launched in May 1999 and commissioned in May 2001; and HMS St Albans launched in May 2000 and commissioned in June 2002.
Batch 1 vessels, HMS Norfolk, and Marlborough were decommissioned in 2005 and Grafton in March 2006.
HMS Richmond was the first RN vessel to receive the HE ER round in April 2004.

The current IRON DUKE is the third RN Ship to bear the name and 5th of the Duke Class Frigates.
Launched on 2 March 1991 by the Ship's Sponsor, Lady Jane King, the wife of the then Secretary of State for Defence, she was commissioned on 30 May 1991.
IRON DUKE enjoyes strong affiliations with her home town of Kingston Upon Hull, the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and the Worshipful Company of Founders.

The frigate was initally designed as a light anti-submarine warfare platform, with a Lynx or EH-101 Merlin active dipping sonar helicopter, to replace the frigates of the Leander class.
HMS Norfolk was the first of the class to enter service, commissioned on June 1, 1990 at a cost of £135.449 million.
On July 21 2004, in a review of defence spending, Defence Secretaty Geoff Hoon announced HMS Norfolk, Marlborough and Grafton were to be paid off.

As a result of these changes the Duke Class frigates were completed with a maximum displacement of around 4,200 tonnes and measure 133m in length 16.1 metres in beam and 7.3 metres in draught.
Iron duke, Marlborough, Richmond, Lancaster, Westminster and Grafton form the 4th Frigate Squadron (F4) at Portsmouth, while Argyll, Monmouth, Norfolk, Somerset, Northumberland, Sutherland and Grafton form the 6th Frigate Squadron (F6) at Devonport.
H.M.S Kent was launched by the Duchess of Kent and is expected to be based at Portsmouth.

Not sure why frigate (HMS Iron Duke) was moved on Saturday - bet there were some very unhappy sailors on-board her.
The old ironclad still had some surprises left on board - including a funnel web spider as a member of the crew:) It was interesting to look round the first British ironclad warship - and compare her to Victory (which is around a 100 years older than Warrior).

On 27 January 2005, HMS Westminster re-joined the Royal Navy's fleet after a 12-month refit which provided sonar 2087, SSTD advanced anti-torpedo defense, new infrastructure to operate EH101 Merlin helicopter and a new computerized navigation system.
On 7 September 2005, the government of the United Kingdom and Chile signed an agreement valued at £135 million for the purchase of three ex-Royal Navy Type 23 frigates for the Chilean Navy.
The three ships involved in this deal were: HMS Norfolk, Marlborough and Grafton.

I recall the mess that was found when HMS Ocean went into operational service.
They found that the osmosis plant couldn't provide enough potable water for the ships needs and had to add another unit - now that is a serious design screwup.
So apart from the period starting from the mid-90's the UK shipbuilding industry did quite well out of the MoD.
