  HMS Argyll (1904) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second HMS Argyll was launched in 1904 after an absence of an Argyll presence in the Royal Navy for over 160 years.
The ship displaced over 10,850 tons and had a length of 473 feet, making her slightly longer than the current Argyll.
Two destroyers, Hornet and Jackal, assisted in the rescue of the stricken cruisers crew.

Destroyer HMS Jackal is scuttled at 32 23N 36 25E after being damaged in the same attack which sank Kipling.

Due to shortages, HMS Ulysses was fitted with a four barrelled pom-pom and HMS Urchin had two additional twin 20 mm anti aircraft guns, both fitted in place of the twin 40 mm anti aircraft gun.
The one known surviving variant, HMS Cavalier, was significantly modified during her service post-war, including the replacement of one gun with the Seacat missile system, although she is still very similar to the vessel that was built during the second world war.
HMS Cavalier is the only world war two vintage destroyer in the UK, and can be found at the Chatham historic dockyard.

Depth charges had to explode within about 20 feet (6.1 metres) of a submarine to breach its hull, and in the initial stages of the war the British depth charges' maximum setting was over 100 feet (30 metres) shallower than the maximum depth that a U-boat could dive to.
To protect the fleet from mines provision for a two speed destroyer sweep (TSDS) was fitted to all but HMS Jervis, who as the flotilla leader had increased accommodation for staff which reduced the space available at the stern of the vessel.
The J class was the first to have only a single funnel, with improvements in boiler design allowing the ships to be fitted with two more powerful boilers rather than the three fitted to the previous Tribal class destroyers, with the net power output being similar.

Lady St Clair-Ford was also there and she brought to show us the one tankard, of a set, rescued from the bridge and returned to the Captain when the survivors reached Alexandria.
The tankard was inscribed "To H.M.S. Kipling from The Kipling Society".

She was commissioned on 6th October 1915 as hospital ship HMS Lanfranc and was capable of carrying 403 wounded from the battlefields of Northern France back to England.
On the 17th April 1917 at 19:30 hrs while bound for Southampton she was torpedoed by the German Submarine UB-40 (also responsible for the sinking of the Salsette and the Tycho), some 4 miles northeast of Le Havre.
Some 570 survivors were picked up by the destroyers HMS Badger and HMS Jackal aided by HMS P 47 and the French patrol boat Roitelet, and taken to Portsmouth.

There was some discontent when it was found that the J class were only slightly smaller than the Tribal class (356.5 feet compared to 377 feet for the Tribals), had fewer main guns (six compared to eight), and yet cost more to build (£390,000 each compared to £340,000).
Their performance silenced the critics, and the basic hull form was adopted for the 'emergency' programme.

My father was a PO Electrician on HMS Jackal at the time of her sinking in May 1942.
If anyone has a photo of the Jackal, or any memorabilia concerning my father, the ship or the crew, I would be delighted to hear from them.
One of my members is 80 years old and was a survivor of the sinking of HMS Jupiter in the Java Sea by a Japanese Submarine.

'Erected by the officers and crew of H.M.S. Rapid in affectionate memory of their late shipmate William F.M. Tucker, born 24th February 1866, died at Sydney, Australia 21st December 1897.
A crew of five or six men went ashore for Captain Lucas, and when about a quarter of a mile from the beach the boat was seen to capsize.
Another boat was quickly dispatched from the 'Jackal', and it succeeded in saving all the crew but one, who was drowned.

I think the boat was the HMS Jackal which was named for a ship involved in some notorious action against the US.
