HMS Neptune and HMS Kandahar sank, while HMS Aurora was badly damaged and HMS Penelope was lightly damaged.
HMS Aurora was patched up at Malta before returning home for repairs at Liverpool from April to June 1942.
HMS Penelope was repaired at Malta but was bombed on 26 March 1942 while still under repair.

My nan lost her brother on HMS Lively in ww2 and is ill herself and is always going on about how did he and the ship die/go down do you have any references to put her mind at rest please.
A report on some of the actions in which HMS Lively was involved in during her short time in the Mediterranean prior to her being sunk on the 11th.
The two German tansports in the convoy Maritza (2910 BRT) and Procida (1842 BRT) are both sunk by HMS Penelope and HMS Lively dispite the presence of the Italian torpedo boats Lupo and Cassiopea.

Of all the thousands of boys and men that trained in the shore establishment HMS Ganges from 1905 until 1976, only two are believed to have been awarded the Victoria Cross.
Able Seaman Albert Edward McKenzie of HMS Vindictive, was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the British and Commonwealth armed forces, following the Royal Navy's famous Raid on Zeebrugge in 1918.
Leading Seaman James Magennis was the only boy trained at HMS Ganges to be awarded the highest British medal for valour in world war two.

ON 15 January 1941 the Prime Minister was informed by the Admiralty through the High Commissioner in London that the steadily increasing requirements of naval ratings arising from the building of new ships, in addition to heavy unforeseen commitments all involving a severe strain on the resources of trained ratings, were causing some concern.
The operations of Force ‘K’ from Malta necessitated extreme measures to maintain the supply of fuel-oil in the island, and HMS Breconshire, a converted merchant ship which could carry 5000 tons of oil, was generally used for that purpose.
The Neptune was the thirteenth British cruiser and the Kandahar the fifty-ninth British destroyer lost during the first twenty-eight months of the war.

Kandahar and Lively were ordered into the mined area to try and take Neptune under tow, and get her clear out of any further harm's way.
of December, Kandahar had submerged from abaft her funnel, but was still afloat, and nothing could be seen of any survivors from Neptune, the destroyer's crew all alone all day, after sunset the sea was rising to become quite rough.
Kandahar had by now drifted clear of the deadly mine field, then at 0400 (4 AM) out of the darkness a destroyer emerged, it was Jaguar sent out from Malta to help.

On 20th January 1941, after the repairs and refit, HMS Galatea arrived at Scapa Flow and on 26th sailed with HMS Nelson, and a number of other ships to carry out a sweep for the German warships Scharnhorst and Gneisnau which were assumed to have passed through the Great Belt on 23rd.
On 23rd March, and again on 5th April Galatea left Scapa Flow with HMS Aurora to cover minelaying operations off Iceland and the Faroe Islands, and on 13th April, she left again with Arethusa for Seydisfjord for a reconnaisance of the Iclelandic harbours.
On 22nd May 1941 she left Scapa Flow with HMS King George the Fifth (KGV) and others to watch for Bismarck and Prinz Eugen which were reported to have left Bergen, Norway, and she continued with operations until Bismarck was sunk on 27th May, when she arrived at Reykjavik with HMS Prince of Wales.

HMS Kimberley - Numerous photos exist, many from a series held by the Imperial War Museum showing her in a 2-colour unofficial scheme, and some in an overall medium or dark grey scheme in 1940.

Joined H.M.S. Penelope in Portsmouth and after a week or so steaming off Portland and where, incidentally was issued with cold weather clothing, so we had a fair idea that we would be going somewhere warm and we were right, we were soon to be back in Gibraltar and operating in the Med.

H.M.S. Ceres, built by John Brown, launched 23rd March 1917.
In February 1941 Ceres blockaded Kisimayu in support of the offensive against Italian Somaliland, in company with the British cruisers HMS Hawkins, HMS Capetown and the British destroyer HMS Kandahar.
Ceres spent two months in the Persian Gulf, and then arrived at Simonstown for a three month refit.She was then based at Aden and she also participated in the fall of Djibouti.

'HMS Kelly' was leading a destroyer flotilla operating against a German minelaying force off the enemy coast - an escorting aircraft reported an U Boat ahead, so the 'Kelly' and her sister ship 'HMS Kandahar' proceeded to hunt it.
On the morning of Friday the 10th, the 'Kandahar' took off the wounded and her RNVR surgeon carried on where 'Kelly's' had left off.
While this was going on and the two ships were lying alongside each other, the first German bombers appeared, their attacks were beaten off by gunfire and three RAF Hudsons which had just arrived, later, two more destroyers joined as escorts and in the afternoon two cruisers as well.

In accordance with C in C Rosyth message 1545/15 the derelict was sunk by gunfire at 17:20, the opportunity being taken to exercise director and quarters firing and ammunition supply under gale conditions.
Sailed from Scapa 04:00 17th November with HMS Kandahar in company to rendezvous with Convoy HN 2, the westabout portion of which was escorted through the Pentland Firth to Cape Wrath.

Due to shortages, HMS Ulysses was fitted with a four barrelled pom-pom and HMS Urchin had two additional twin 20 mm anti aircraft guns, both fitted in place of the twin 40 mm anti aircraft gun.
The one known surviving variant, HMS Cavalier, was significantly modified during her service post-war, including the replacement of one gun with the Seacat missile system, although she is still very similar to the vessel that was built during the second world war.
HMS Cavalier is the only world war two vintage destroyer in the UK, and can be found at the Chatham historic dockyard.

HMS Kelly (F.01) was built by Hawthorn Leslie and launched on the 25th October 1938.
Served in the Home Waters until 1940-41 when she went to the Mediterranean HMS Kelly was sunk by German aircraft off Crete on the 23rd may 1941.
My grandfather Joseph Micallef served on the HMS Kelly and was the only Maltese survivor when she sank in the battle of Crete.

Petty Officer Frederick Weiss of HMS Neptune was my uncle on my mothers side,due to the break up of her family at a very young age she never knew him.Does anyone possibly have an old picture of him or any other information,I would be most grateful to hear from you.
She wrote that "Dickie" had trained at HMS Ganges but I had no other information and as you can imagine I did not want to ask further questions in case I caused my newly found mum some distress.
I was so pleased to read about the Memorial to the ships companies of HMS Neptune and HMS Kandahar that has been built at the National Memorial Arboretum at Burton on Trent in July this year.
