  Bute Maritime Memories
In September 1942 HMS Varbel was commissioned at Port Bannatyne (the Hydro) as the shore base for X craft midget submarines of the 12th Flotilla, a further base was established in Loch Striven as HMS Varbel II.
HMS Bonaventure was completed as a depot ship for the X craft in January 1943, she moved temporarily to Loch Cairnbawn for the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in August 1943 before taking the 14th Flotilla of X craft to the Far East in February 1945.
HMS Adamant moved with her submarines to Faslane on the Gareloch in October 1957 thus ending the permanent RN presence in Rothesay Bay.

The next day HMS Howe, HMS King George V and their escort of cruisers and destroyers left Scapa Flow and headed to the North Atlantic and thence on to Gibraltar to join Force H, the British and American forces in the Western Mediterranean.
HMS Wren was first commissioned in 1943 and all WREN’S in the service ‘volunteered’ a days pay towards the cost of the vessel.
After leaving Wren I was assigned to HMS Kingfisher for the sole purpose of decommissioning her and then running her skeletal remains onto the beach at Harwich to rot in her own good time.

Captain Wickes, with the crew of Reprisal, aided by Captain John Barry with the crew of Lexington, was able to keep off the boats sent from HMS Kingfisher[?], and to save about 200 barrels of powder.
During that month, Captain Wickes captured a number of vessels in the West Indies, and, on July 27, had a sharp encounter with HMS Shark[?] off Martinique, beating her off and escaping into port.
On October 24, 1776, Wickes was ordered by Congress to proceed to Nantes, France[?], in Reprisal, taking to his post Benjamin Franklin, who had been appointed Commissioner to France.

After qualifying as a Frigate Navigating Officer in 1993, he completed a successful appointment in HMS Beaver and was thereafter selected to command the Hunt Class MCMV, HMS Quorn.
His appointment as PWO(CEW) in HMS Coventry included a NATO deployment and a short period in the Adriatic in support of operations in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.

On the following day, the 27th, when about 180 miles to north-east of Barbuda, the British 18-gun ship-sloops, Kingfisher, Captain Richard William Cribb, and Osprey, Captain Timothy Clinch, appeared in sight to windward, and were chased by the French frigates.
On the 12th of May, 1806, the Pallas, accompanied by the 44-gun rate Indefatigable, Captain John Tremayne Rodd, and 16-gun ship-sloop Kingfisher, Captain George Francis Seymour, again stood in to reconnoitre the French squadron in the road of the Isle of Aix.
Shortly afterwards a few distant broadsides were exchanged between one of the French frigates and the Kingfisher.

The Rotary Club of Redditch Kingfisher was chartered on June 3rd 1988.
We did however have contacts with the HMS Kingfisher with several members visiting the ship on two occasions when it was in dock and we also had members of the crew attend one of our Rotary meetings.
To celebrate our inauguration as a Rotary Club we had a special first day cover printed and a painting of a Kingfisher was commissioned which was then used as artwork for some of our other Club souvenirs.

Herbert N DYMOTT is recorded as a Clerk on HMS Kingfisher, at sea or in a foreign port.
William, the eldest son, was born in 1845 and died in 1921, whilst the youngest, Herbert, was born in 1862 and died in 1937.

The master, 63 crewmembers and six gunners were picked up by HMS Skate & landed at Londonderry 1941 - Minesweeping trawler HMS Romeo commissioned 1941 - U-138 sunk west of Cadiz, in position 36.04N, 07.29W, by depth charges from destroyers HMS Faulknor, Fearless, Forester, Foresight & Foxhound.
The rescue was greatly assisted by the small red lights and whistles that had only recently been added to the standard life vests then in use 1944 - U-767 sunk in the English Channel SW of Guernsey, in position 49.03N, 03.13W, by depth charges from destroyers HMS Fame, Inconstant and Havelock.
The HMS Nymph was launched at Chatham Dockyard in May 1778 and served King George III's Navy as a support vessel in both the East and West Indies.

I visited your website as I was researching an Ex Royal Navy ship HMS King Salvor on which I was christened in 1949 in Hong Kong harbour.
I found that it was sold to the Argentine Navy in 1961 and renamed Tehuelche and renamed again in 1963 as Guardiamarina Zicari.
I note that on your website you have the original name as HMS Kingfisher but it should read HMS King Salvor.
