 The Wartime Memories Project - HMS Kingston
HMS KINGSTON was commissioned at Cowes Isle of White.
Along with the GLASGOW, CALENDON and KANDAHAR the KINGSTON took part in the capture of Berbera and the landing of troops at Mersa Kuba for the recapture of British Somaliland.
William Davidson joined HMS KINGSTON on August 1939 at the Isle of White and remained with her until she was sunk on June 1942 in Malta harbour, one of the few to see service on her for the duration of her life.

Kingston has been a leader in studies of chromatin remodeling and its role in controlling activation and repression of genes throughout development.
She joined the HMS faculty in 1976 as a clinical instructor in pathology at Cambridge City Hospital and in 1977 became an instructor in pathology at New England Deaconess Hospital.
DeGirolami is survived by her husband, Umberto, HMS professor of pathology at Brigham and Women's and at Children's; two children, Laura DeGirolami-VanderElst, a third-year medical student at HMS, and Marc; and one grandchild.

 War Patrols
Two other destroyers, HMS KINGSTON (Lt Cdr P Somerville) and HMS KASHMIR (Lt Cdr H A King), responded to HMS ICARUS's alert; all were under the direction of Captain Lord Louis Mountbatten aboard the HMS KELLY.
Directed by HMS ICARUS to the likely spot, HMS KINGSTON was able to establish ASDIC contact and made two depth-charge attacks, which jammed the diving planes of U-35 and put her at a sharp up angle.
HMS ICARUS, HMS KINGSTON and HMS KASHMIR issued formal reports to the Admiralty in December 1939.

HMS KINGSTON was a destroyer of the ‘Kelly’ Class, completed on 14 September 1939.
In the Battle of Crete, she was damaged by three near misses on the 22 May. She proceeded to Alexandria with HMS KANDIHAR, picking up on the way survivors of the cruiser FIJI, which had been bombed and sunk that day.
HMS KINGSTON took part in the escort of further convoy to Malta in 1942.

David Van Vactor, HMS professor of cell biology, has been named the new head of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences graduate program at HMS, effective immediately.
He replaces Robert Kingston, HMS professor of genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital, who has completed his service as head of the program.
Kingston headed the program for three years and has played a leading role in the study of the way chromosomal proteins control and maintain stable patterns of gene activity.

  A Survey of US Ships Transferred to Britain in Exchange for Western Hemisphere Basing Rights
The new HMS Hamilton was damaged in a collision with the new HMS Georgetown and subsequently transferred from the RN to the RCN, becoming the HMCS Hamilton.
One of the destroyers lost achieved unique fame; the HMS Campbeltown being expended as a floating bomb in a daring commando attack in which it rammed the gates of the French dry-dock on the Biscay Coast capable of accepting the battleship Tirpitz.
Intercepted and boarded in part by HMCS Niagara and HMS Burwell assisting trawlers HMS Northern Chief, HMS Kingston Agathe, HMS Wastwater and HMS Windermere.

On the 22nd May 1941 HMS Fiji was sunk by enemy aircraft 50 miles south west of Gavdo Island.
The Fiji, along with HMS Gloucester, HMS Kandahar and HMS Kingston, had been sent to assist HMS Greyhound which was under air attack.
With barely enough daylight left and with aircraft gone (to refuel and re-arm at their bases) HMS Kandahar and HMS Kingston returned to pick up survivors.

HMS KINGSTON picked up Werner Lott and eleven others, who were the last to leave the boat.
Incidentally, Lott refers in the 2nd paragraph of his letter of 9th September 1974 to my telling him of a visit to Germany in general, and to Laboe in particular, which I had paid shortly before the war.
