HMS Ladybird was a Royal Navy river patrol boat launched in 1916 and was one of the Insect class of river patrol boats.
On December 12, 1937, Ladybird, along with Bee bacame involved in the Panay incident and came under fire from a Japanese artillery unit near Wuhu on the Yangtze.
Ladybird was allocated to Singapore in 1940 and then, along with five others of the class, stripped down and towed to the Mediterranean.

HMS Tyne arrived at San Pedro Bay at the beginning of April and remained until 24 May, supporting the 18 destroyers and seven sloops and frigates with the Fleet and Fleet Train.
HMS Tyne arrived at Eniwetok in July 1945 to act as a headquarters and repair ship for the oilier groups and their escorts and also to act as a communications link between the Fleet and Manus, which remained the Fleet Train base.
HMS Tyne returned to Devonport to begin a refit on 28 February 1949 and she returned to service on 26 October 1950, joining the Mediterranean Fleet as the flagship of Flag Officer, Flotillas, serving as a Harbour Depot ship until February 1953.

Although HMS Bee was fired upon by the same Japanese artillery battery that damaged HMS Ladybird, I have seen no mention that Bee was actually hit (in fact, I have seen mention that HMS Bee was not hit).
Receiving word that HMS Ladybird and USS Oahu are now present, the survivors are seen leaving the village and returning to the Yangtze to be rescued.
HMS Ladybird and USS Oahu are then seen in Shanghai with the Bund in the distance.

He swam away from the hulk with a few other survivors and was picked up at the last minuet by a cutter from one of the other warships involved in the action.
I think I have one more shot of the Ladybird on her keel in the harbor and a few other shots at other points in her service.
All I have found about HMS Ladybird, is on my Ahoy website under Letters, and the heading Ladybird.

The crew was rescued by the minesweeping trawler HMS Paramount & landed at Swansea.
The sole survivor, stoker Harald Hvidtsten was picked up by frigate HMS Tyler in the early morning hours of the next day.

The Panay was bombed and sunk; three men were killed, and forty-three sailors and five civilians were wounded.
Survivors were later taken on board the American vessel USS Oahu and the British ships HMS Ladybird and Bee.
It was a nervous time for the American ambassador to Japan, Joseph C. Grew, who feared the Panay incident might lead to a break in diplomatic ties between Japan and the United States.

I served with the British Army in the 1940's (after the war!), and was for a time in Tobruk.

 The Aftermath
The IROQUOIS, with an American destroyer escort, USS MARSH, was making a daylight interdiction bombardment on a coastwise stretch of the main North Korean railway line.
Sometime previously, HMS CHARITY (destroyer) caught a train on this section of line and blasted it and several hundred yards of track, successfully cutting the Reds' principal east coast line of communication.
The interdiction task, which the IROQUOIS and MARSH were carrying out on the afternoon of October 2 1952, was designed to keep that line cut.

When North Korea invaded South Korea on Sunday 25th June 1950, HMS Triumph was on a cruise to Japan, in company with the other ships of the Far East Fleet.
Triumph was heading for Kong Kong, and when news reached Triumph of the Korean attack on Monday, a flight of fully armed Seafires were kept on deck, in case of emergencies.
Rear Admiral Andrewes, was Flag Officer, Second in Command, Far East Fleet, and flew his flag in HMS Belfast, and was joined by HMS Triumph, and HMS Cossack, to reinforce the US 7th Fleet at Okinawa, with HMS Jamaica, and HMS Consort.
