  HMS Ladybird (1916) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Ladybird was an Insect class gunboat of the Royal Navy, launched in 1916.
On December 12, 1937, Ladybird, along with Bee became involved in the Panay incident and came under fire from a Japanese artillery unit near Wuhu on the Yangtze.
Ladybird was allocated to Singapore in 1940 and then, along with five others of the class, stripped down and towed to the Mediterranean.

HMS Robin became famous with the local population for chasing pirates and a legend arose that she had sailed overland from the Yangtze in pursuit of the same (Robin never saw service on the Yangtze).
HMS Ladybird took six shells (photo of damage) and Bee dodged a shell as she came upon the scene.
HMS Ladybird sustained damage during the trip to the Mediterranean and was never again able to sustain a speed over 7 knots due to a misaligned hull.

He swam away from the hulk with a few other survivors and was picked up at the last minuet by a cutter from one of the other warships involved in the action.
I think I have one more shot of the Ladybird on her keel in the harbor and a few other shots at other points in her service.
All I have found about HMS Ladybird, is on my Ahoy website under Letters, and the heading Ladybird.

I have come to the conclusion that after the failure of reconstructing HMS GNAT with HMS CRICKET, Cricket was laid up in Suez until a suitable ship could be found to tow her to her final destination.

In the spring of 1930 GUAM was at Chungking with British, French and Japanese gunboats; Tutu as at Wanhsien with a British gunboat and PANAY was at Ichang.
On December 12, 1937 HMS LADYBIRD was struck by four Japanese artillery shells from shore batteries in and around Shanghai.

On 12th December 1918 in the Baltic she rescued 430 of the total crew of 470 of HMS CASSANDRA when that vessel struck a mine and sank.
On that day at sea with HMS GREYHOUND she sank an enemy schooner attempting to run the blockade, before proceeding to a rendezvous with an Alexandria bound convoy.

On 12 December 1918 in the Baltic she rescued 430 of the total crew of 470 of HMS CASSANDRA when that vessel struck a mine and sank.
On 28 October the Italian Army invaded Greece from Albania and it followed that reinforcement of Greece and Crete involved a further commitment for the Mediterranean Fleet, and in the first days of November while VENDETTA was completing her refit at Malta, steps were taken to support Greek resistance on land and at sea.
A fuelling base was established at Suda Bay in Crete and on 1 November the cruiser HMS AJAX landed troops and artillery.

The vessels included the first HMS Shoreham, constructed in 1693, with a length of 82 ft. and supporting 32 guns.
There does not appear to be any evidence of any subsequent construction so it is probable that the same bridge remained until 1916 when the bridge was rebuilt to its previous design, with just a few minor modifications.
Captain Henry Roberts (from Shoreham) was promoted to Captain and whilst in command of HMS Undaunted in the West Indies, he caught yellow fever and died in 1796.
