On the night of 24th October 1943, in company with 'HMS Hurworth', 'HHMS Adrias' set off for a position south of Leros to create a diversion to protect ships landing stores on Leros for the British troops occupying the island.
On their way there they ran into a newly laid minefield, both ships were struck by mines, the 'Adrias' was first to be hit, she had her bows blown off as far back as the bridge.
On the evening of 1st December 1943, weather conditions right and initially escorted by three Motor Gun Boats she began the hazardous journey.

As a subsidiary naval vessel she was known as HMS Bark Endevour, as distinct from another vessel of the same name already in service.
Lbd 186.6 x 21.1 x 10.7 ft. In 1920 converted into a hulk and towed between Melbourne and Geelong until 1943 when the US armed forces decided to tow her to New Guinea, but on arrival at Brisbane she was dumped at the Bishop Island graveyard, Moreton Bay.

The EDINBURGH CASTLE of 1947 was built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast for the Union Castle Mail SS Co, and was a sister ship to the PRETORIA CASTLE.
At the outbreak of war on 3rd Sep.1939 she was at Pernambuco, and on 9th Oct, while attempting to reach Germany, she was intercepted by HMS BELFAST in severe weather north of Iceland.
Co., Govan, she was launched for Canadian Pacific SS Co. on 22nd June 1955 by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

In February 1894 while a Midshipman in HMS Raleigh he served with the Naval Brigade at Bathurst, Gambia, during the punitive expedition against Fouli Silah, and received the GS Medal with the "Gambia" clasp.
He was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for an act of gallantry at Portsmouth, 23/10/1909 when "during a strong gale from NW, the Antrim picket boat, when half way from the harbour to Antrim dipped almost under, and two of the crew were swept overboard.
He served in HMS Achilles as Midshipman during the Egyptian War of 1882; later in the Hydrographic Dept. at the Admiralty.
