British Navy destroyer HMS Glasgow under the command of Captain Michael Wainhouse arrived Thursday in Punta Arenas from the Falkland Islands for a rest and recovery period, reports the local newspaper La Prensa Austral.
HMS Glasgow D88 is currently responsible for the Royal Navy´s South Atlantic Patrol.
HMS Endurance is also involved for half the year as the Ice Patrol Ship off Antarctica.

HMS Leeds Castle sailed into Portsmouth Harbour for the last time on Monday as her 24 year navy career came to an end.
Leeds Castle left the Islands for the last time in November and has been busy with various tasks in places such as Lithuania, Norway and Newcastle.
Leeds Castle and Dumbarton Castle are being replaced in their Falkland Island patrol duties by brand new ship HMS Clyde.

HMS Leeds Castle was a Castle-class corvette of the Royal Navy, originally with pennant number K384.
She was built by William Pickersgill and Sons Ltd. in Sunderland, launched on 12 October 1943 and completed in February 1944.
As with other surviving Castle-class corvettes, she had been redesigned as a frigate in 1948 and her pennant number accordingly changed to F384.

The occasion was marked by a rededication ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base which began with a formal parade inspected by Lady Peggy Speed, the original sponsor of the ship which she launched in 1981.
And Naval tradition was upheld with the cutting of a cake by Mrs Nicola Milburn, wife of HMS Leeds Castle's CO, Lt Cdr Philip Milburn, and SES Mark Deboer-Lloyd, the youngest member of the ship's company.

The Castle Class vessels are the largest dedicated patrol vessels operated by the Royal Navy.
If terrorists ever took over one of the rigs it would undoubtedly be members of the SBS who would be sent to recapture it as this is one of the primary roles of that elite squadron.
The uses of such a helicopter could include, the transfer of a Royal Marines platoon (although when a covert landing is required, it is likely that the Royal Marines would use of the RIB boats) medevac operations, along with general provisioning and transfer operations.

According to the MOD, HMS Clyde is due to be deployed to the Falklands in early summer 2007 when she will relieve HMS Dumbarton Castle which has been in the South Atlantic since late 2004.
Dumbarton Castle and her sister, Leeds Castle, have alternated in Falkland Islands waters, but the greatly increased reliability that will be delivered by the new ship, both through design and a tailored maintenance regime, means that she will be the only ship needed in future and both 'Castles' can be disposed of.
HMS Clyde's charter period under the contract extends to February 2012, the 'Castle's' original disposal date.

The ship, due to pay off in August, was in the commercial dockyard at Chatham when a fire started four to five hundred yards from her berth in a stockpile of paper in an industrial area.
HMS Leeds Castle was able to use upper deck connections to use her fire main to provide double the pressure of the Fire Brigade’s equipment, and with two pumps to ensure no pressure loss over the distance.
At 1000 the Fire Brigade took over pumping from HMS Leeds Castle, although minimal extra water was required at that time.

A break from operational duties around the Falkland Islands allowed patrol ship HMS Leeds Castle to pay a five-day visit to Rio Grande Do Sul in southern Brazil.
During the second day she was open to visitors for four hours and received more than 400 guests, despite the heavens opening and queuing visitors suffering a heavy downpour accompanied by a thunderstorm.
By the end of the first half Leeds Castle were losing 4-0.

HMS Leeds Castle, in one of her last acts before departing the Falkland Islands, rededicated the Ardent-Antelope Cross on a typically blustery September day.
When it was noticed that this particular memorial was in a poor state of repair a team from the ship led by CPOWEA Jason King and CPOMEA Andrew Collinson dedicated numerous weekends throughout the winter months, often in arduous conditions, to completely overhaul the monument.
The HMS Yarmouth website has news on a painting of their ship longside the Ardent on the 21 May 1982.

In November 1997, just two years after graduating and nine months after joining the army, I was aboard HMS Leeds Castle heading for the remote Antarctic island of South Georgia, writes Captain Philip Carter (MBChB 1995).
It wasn't until five hours later, as Leeds Castle navigated its way into Cumberland Bay, that the mist lifted and the island began to show off.
I was to spend the next five months surrounded by high mountains, freezing seas and the island's huge populations of penguins and seals, and all I had to do was provide the medical cover for the small number of British soldiers and civilians that live there.

 Castle Class Patrol Vessels
The Castle Class were designed as purpose built Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) to either relegate the aging Ton Class vessels to coastal waters or replace them altogether.
Although no hanger is provided, refeuling facilities are available and allow the helicopter to operate at sea for longer periods of time without needing to return to base.
During the Falklands Campaign (1982) they served as dispatch vessels and in recent years they have alternated the role of Falkland Islands Guardship, spending long periods of time (up to three years) in the South Atlantic, with their crews rotating every four months.

The Royal Navy has been invaluable as usual with two trips to Rio last year, and it is expected that they will be as helpful this year delivering the stocks of clothes and toys that we have stored up in the UK.
HMS Newcastle took donations over to Rio last June, and HMS Westminster sailed over in September last year.
The crew from HMS Westminster found the time and energy to organise an amazing barbeque party at Casa Jimmy, which the children, teenagers, staff and volunteers enjoyed tremendously!

HMS Leeds Castle was briefly seen at the Memorial services, but the captain didn't hang about afterwards and there was no armed honour guard.
But once found, it was very moving to be able to place your wooden cross where it belonged and reflect on the life it represented.
There is a bar leading off from the main hall and the walls are festooned with pictures and letters, pride of place going to a letter from Margaret Thatcher to the villagers thanking them for their hospitality on her visit in 1983.
