The seventh Lion was a 4-gun hoy purchased in 1702 and in the records until 1737.
Lion, laid down in 1938, was to have been the name ship of a class of four battleships.

No less than eighteen vessels of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Lion, after the lion, an animal traditionally associated with courage, and also used in several heraldric motifs representing England and the British Monarchy.
The seventeenth Lion was a battlecruiser launched in 1910, served Rear Admiral David Beatty's flagship at the battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland, and sold in 1924.
The eighteenth Lion (C34) was a cruiser launched in 1944 (as HMS Defence) but not completed until 1960.

HMS Lion was the nameship of the Lion class of battlecruisers and served as Admiral Beatty’s flagship at the three main North Sea naval battles of the First World War.
The Lion was hit by two shells that pierced her hull in the first ten minutes of the fight.
During the battle the Lion was hit by thirteen 12in shells from the Lützow, suffering 99 dead and 44 wounded.

HMS Lion was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy launched in 1910, the lead ship of her class.
She was originally constructed with her foremast and spotting top behind her forefunnel; the heat and fumes made access to the spotting top difficult and after her initial trials she was rebuilt with the foremast and fore funnel switched in position.
In response she was struck by a salvo from the German Battlecruiser SMS Derfflinger which crippled her, forcing her to fall out of line and Admiral Beatty to lose control of his squadron until he transferred his flag to HMS New Zealand.

HMS Gamecock was also a centre for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Air branch) and was used by 1833 (RNVR) Squadron.

Between 8-15th October 1940 the Firedrake, together with HMS Hotspur, owing to their high endurance, were allocated as extra escorts for convoy HG 45 Gib to UK.
The corvette HMS Sunflower came to the rescue but because of the extremely bad weather they couldn’t get close enough to take the surviving men off what was left of the Firedrake, their skipper decided to circle the Firedrake hoping the weather would become better by daylight.
HMS Sunflower, managed to rescue six officers and 20 ratings from a crew of 194.

Our HMS Lion represents the vessel as designed in 1938 and is constructed on a fiberglass hull created by her skipper, Michael Raue.
Running as an unarmed vessel in January 2001, HMS Lion was the "Last Man Standing" at the end of the final battle of the AusBG's AGM Battle in January 2001, the last armed vessel (RMS Littorio) having retired in a sinking condition after a long pursuit of the Lion.
Due to the care and attention of her skipper, HMS Lion is now one of the most reliable vessels in the Australian Battle Group.

HMS Lion, with her sisters, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Princess Royal, were completed in 1912-3 and, at 700 feet long and 29,700 tons, were the largest warships thus far laid down.
At Jutland, flying Admiral Beatty's flag, the Lion was heavily engaged with the High Seas Fleet and was lucky to survive; her sister, the Queen Mary, blew up with the loss of most of her crew.
In the case of the Lion, the sections of the base plate must be pinned to a prepared wooden plank and the keel and hull frames then attached.

HMS Ganges sailed to Devonport for keel to be scraped.
By 1901 sufficient beds were ready ashore to enable HMS Caroline to discharge her patients and return to Chatham to be fitted out as an overflow training ship for the Ganges with accommodation for 60 boys.

HMS Firedrake the destroyer Tynemouth adopted in February last year after the towns Warship Week objective of £250,000 had been more than trebled, has been lost.
The night of the 16/17th December 1942 was a tragedy for the families of the crew of HMS Firedrake, but for one family it was double the heartbreak, this was the Totterdell family of Essex, who had two of their sons onboard, Gerald and Ronald, both were lost that night.
George never talked much about his wartime experiences except to say that he "went in to the navy as a lion and came out like a lamb." He did, however, have very fond memories of his stay in Quincy, Massachusetts USA while the Firedrake underwent substantial repairs at the nearby Boston dockyard.

HMS Tiger was one of a proposed class of eight Light Cruisers, known as the Minotaur Class, which were ordered under the 1941 and 1942 Warship Construction Programmes.
HMS Tiger was one of three Group 2 ships which were laid up in 1946 prior to completion.
A similar planned conversion for HMS Lion was cancelled due to a lack of funds and she has the distinction of being the Royal Navy's last "all gun cruiser" decommissioning in early 1972.

My slightly better aiming, combined with Lion having the only large caliber (1/4") cannons made her look like a real heavy hitter in the club's first year.
It doesn't matter if Lion is ten knots faster than the ship it is pursuing - by the time Lion completes the turn the other ship is long gone.
This weakness, coupled with the fact most people stay away from Lion because of the reputation it earned early on, makes it a very boring ship to skipper if you are an agreesive combatant - which I am.
