  The Lizard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name 'Lizard' is a corruption of the Cornish name 'Lys Airt', meaning 'high court'; it is purely coincidental that much of the peninsula is composed of a rock called serpentine.
The Lizard is important from a geological point of view as it is Britain's only example of an ophiolite.
The Lizard was featured on the BBC television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the South West.

HMS King Alfred was the first of three naval establishments to make Brighton & Hove their war-time home; in May 1941 Roedean School for Girls was requisitioned to house the navy's Torpedo and Mine training school, HMS Vernon, evacuated from the bombing in Portsmouth.
HMS Vernon was withdrawn to Portsmouth by the end of July 1945 and Roedean was reopened as a girls' school in January 1946.
HMS Lizard was no longer needed as a landing craft depot after the end of hostilities in Europe and was wound down to close on New Year's Eve 1945.

 William Boyle, 12th Earl of Cork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Boyle was the second of four sons in a family of nine, born to Colonel Gerald Edmund Boyle, a grandson of the 8th Earl of Cork, and to Lady Elizabeth Theresa Pepys, daughter of the 1st Earl of Cottenham.
His next appointment was as executive officer of the cruiser HMS Astraea which was transferred to the Mediterranean and then to the China station.
Boyle was a participant in the conference held aboard HMS Dufferin that set the time of the start of the Arab Revolt.

The base was commissioned as an independent command with the ship’s name HMS ‘Lizard’ on October 7th 1942, Lieutenant-Commander.
HMS ’Lizard’s last major operation was her involvement with the preparations for D-Day, June 6th 1944.’Lizard’ provided a logistic and maintenance support base for the huge numbers of vessels which crowded into Shoreham harbour in the run up to the invasion code name Operation ‘NEPTUNE’.
In early June 1945 members of the Ship’s company of HMS ’Lizard’, and their commanding officer, Captain Hordern, attended the funeral of Captain J. Pelly CBE RN, commanding officer of HMS ‘King Alfred’, who died suddenly on the morning of June 6th 1945.

 Exploring the Lizard Peninsula
The Lizard Peninsula is bounded, as its name suggests, on three sides by the sea.
On the northern, landward, side it is almost separated from the rest of Cornwall by the Helford River cutting deeply into the landscape as far as Gweek.
Lizard Point is famous as the most southerly point of mainland Britain with a fine lighthouse - built 22nd August 1752 - open to the public and good cliff walks.

He was born in 1890 and joined the Navy in 1905 at the age of 15.

At the western end of the Lizard lie Kynance sands and the sheer cliffs which form the outer edge of Mount's Bay.
It was blowing hard as the Anson made her way down channel, and when Captain Lydiard finally sighted Ushant the storm was so bad that he decided to put about and return to Falmouth.
On the afternoon of December 28th the Anson was well to leeward of the Lizard and being a cut down third-rate she was not a good sailboat and the Capt. Realised that he was in big trouble.

He was serving on HMS Warspite and was buried in Ramlah War Cemetery, Palestine.
My Grandfather was a CPO on HMS Warspite during WW2, Unfortunately he passed away in 1993, I and my family would be eternally grateful to hear from anyone who may have known Eric Sussex or even better have some pictures of the crew which may include him aboard the Warspite or any information.

Jean joined the WRNS at Leeds Initial Training Depot-HMS Victory III, she was then posted to HMS Lizard (a stone frigate!) at Hove which provided a centre for the accommodation and drafting of crews for landing craft which were based at ports along the Sussex coast.
With the closure of Lizard in 1945, Wren Byard was posted to HMS Northney I, a holiday camp on Hayling Island which had been used as a landing craft holding base for Chichester and Langstone Harbours.
In February 1946 HMS Northney was returned to civilian use and Wren Byard was drafted to HMS Collingwood between Fareham and Lee-on-Solent which was and still is the centre for training technicians in the RN.

 HMS MAXTON M1165 - SUEZ CANAL CLEARANCE - 1974
Clearly seen are the "berms" (sandbank fortifications) on the left hand side of canal which marked the Israeli defence lines (the "Bar-Lev" line) at the end of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
We were joined in Ismailia, or rather Lake Timsah, by the USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY, who anchored in the Lake and assumed control of the Task Force.
As well as the bar she also provided us with an opportunity to go onboard for a meal (real steak!) and of course the chance to see "DEEP THROAT" - I`m sure there were more Brits onboard to watch the movie than there were US personnel...

We came together in HMS Effingham, part of the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.
On formation 803 Flotilla were sent to HMS Lizard in Brighton, Sussex, their LCV(p)s were docked in the Portslade Basin, we took them over from RN Ratings.
Four of our crafts and crews were seconded to HMS Tormentor in the Solent, Southampton, there we sailed each day to act as Safety/Guard ships to the Duplex (Swimming) tanks practising landings in Osborne Bay, Isle of Wight.

On 13th September 1745, the crew of HMS Lizard captured the French privateer L'Indomptable and subsequently hired Richard Drakeford as their prize agent.
The documents created and used by Drakeford relating to the capture of this vessel illustrate the process by which a naval prize was dealt with.

My client was keen to uncover the exact whereabouts of the wreck and details of the type of equipment which had been removed from the Roebuck at the time of the crisis.
The process: I was able to locate the log books for the vessels which rescued the Roebuck; HMS Anglesey, HMS Hastings, HMS Lizard and East Indiaman Canterbury.
Although the material I had uncovered did not give the Australian team explicit instructions as to the whereabouts of the wreck, there were numerous little clues submerged in the text, which, when put together, provided vital leads.
