I am at present putting the final touches to the HMS Llandaff 3rd Reunion to be held in our home town of Llandaff, Cardiff on October 10th and the main evening being Saturday the 11th October 2003.
He is currently in Ipswich Hospital and spoke of his time at HMS Ganges during a visit to him the other the day.
I have to state that I am deeply saddened that due to the ongoing `pantomime` over the venue of a reunion, the Association is brought to the position it now finds itself, which I see as causing irreparable damage to its credibility within the ex naval, and indeed the active naval world.

The story (which is disputed by some) goes that Darwin took Harriet back to England with him and gave her to the Bishop of Llandaff in Wales, from here she found her way to the Botanic Gardens in Brisbane, Australia, and then spent her last years living at Steve Irwin’s zoo in Beerwah, Queensland, Australia.
She died at the age of 176 of a heart attack on June 23rd, weighed 150 kg, and was the oldest living animal in captivity.

In August 1944 HMS Catterick was employed in the escorting of convoys required for the landing forces involved in operation "Dragoon," this was the Allied invasion of Southern France.
HMS Catterick returned to the U.K. after VE Day, and was then journeyed to Durban, South Africa where the crew were discharged, and the ship was refitted before it was being sold to the Greek Navy.
HMS Catterick (Lt A. Tyson) picks up 310 survivors from the British passenger ship Llandaff Castle that was torpedoed and sunk on 28 November 1942 southeast of Lourenco Marques in position 27º20'S, 33º40'E by the German submarine U-177.

I left HMS Llandaff in the May, which was just before she was due to visit Dan Helder in Holland, and a couple of months before Prince Charles’ investiture at Canarvon Castle, Wales.
Although it is known that HMS Llandaff was sold to the Bangladesh Navy and renamed Umar Farooq, the ending is not clear.
However, in 1998 I was talking on the telephone to Mike Fielding (ex-Policeman turned Private Detective), and he said that Llandaff had been sunk into the sand at the end of Dacca runway and the 965 radar was being used as part of the Ground Control Approach.

Salisbury collided with the Destroyer HMS Diamond in the English Channel on June 23rd 1964 and was severely damaged.
On March 1st 1956 Llandaff was moored in the River Tyne in a storm, during which she broke he lines and collided with the cruiser Bermuda, frigate Russell and a merchant ship, sustaining damage in the process.
Llandaff was sold to Bangladesh in 1976, being transferred at London on December 10th and renamed Oomar Farooq (F16).

HMS Lincoln While operating out of Singapore, in December 1962, the frigate HMS Lincoln was deployed in support of military operations with the Gurkha Sappers and Rifles, and other British military units in Brunei and Sarawak.
HMS Lincoln carried long boats on the quarter deck which were specially used along with the ships boats to run the Gurkhas up the shallow rivers.
Recommissioned in Singapore approx 1966 and crewed from HMS Lincoln, the crew was all volunteer of 17 rating, a lieutenant as CO and a midshipman.

HMS Fife was shipshape and Bristol fashion that day and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, especially as I'm ex-US Navy and a destroyerman for life.
Served on HMS Fife (D20) March 1982-85, I remember being crash drafted to the Fife (Banana Boat) from a cushy job at PCG in HMS Vernon at the start of the Falklands only to find she was still in refit.
There was a good documentry series here on HMS Brilliant and a run she made through the Med probably back in the late 80's early 90's It is sad to realise the old ships are either scrap or sold to third world navies especially the leanders and the County Class.

HMS Llandaff (F61) was a Salisbury-class or Type 61 aircraft direction frigate of the British Royal Navy, named for the district of Llandaff in Cardiff, Wales.
She was built by Hawthorn Leslie and Company at Hebburn on the River Tyne, launched in 1955 and completed in 1958.
Llandaff transferred to the Bangladeshi Navy at Royal Albert Dock, London December 10, 1976.

There were no casualties., HMS Britomart (Lt Commander S Stamwitz DSC) one of the escort, stood by and escorted the ship to an anchorage behind Kildin Island and then helped to get the fire under control.
Llandaff eventually entered harbour, though it was three days later before the fire was out.
She was thus not available to join the escort for Russian icebreakers who were being moved from the Dvina River to the Kara Sea, though HMS Britomart took part (see Britomart’s letter of Proceedings).

HMS Llandaff (Type 61 frigate) did time on bandit patrol in the Malacca straits 1959 stopping local Chinese junks and searching them for arms coming over from Sumatra.
Reunions are now held annually at the Llandaff institute close to Llandaff Cathedral the home of the Pennant and bell from the ship which was presented to the City in 1976.

At 17.29 hours on 30 Nov, 1942, the unescorted Llandaff Castle (Master Cornwallis Jasper Clutterbuck, OBE) was hit by two torpedoes from U-177 southeast of Lourenço Marques.
He then asked if there were any wounded he was told that they were only wet so, amused, he left the area.
The master, 155 crew members, four gunners and 150 passengers were picked up on 2 December by HMS Catterick (L 81) (Lt A. Tyson) and landed at Durban.

The 1,260-ton vessel, commissioned in 1977, joins sister ship HMS Jersey in the Bangladeshi fleet – now known as the Shaheed Ruhul Amin, the former RN vessel sailed east in 1994 and is now a training ship.
Former Salisbury-class Type 61 frigate HMS Llandaff is now the Umar Farooq, having transferred at the end of 1976, while two Type 41 Leopard-class frigates remain on their books as training vessels – the former HMS Lynx (now the Abu Bakr) and HMS Jaguar (now Ali Haider).
Bangladesh also has four of the 12-strong River-class minesweepers – seven are with Brazil and the final one remains in Britain as a training ship.

We were trained in London and had to pass the required levels to qualify as efficient gunners.
The next day the Llandaff sailed from London and we learned our destination was South Africa.
The Warwick was over 20,000 tons and had a top speed in excess of 20 knots; her Captain, Captain Shaw was indeed a fine person and was later awarded a decoration for bravery.

If you did please hang on to them for next year to save on costs of re printing them.
Ron Preston’s Wife Olive also had to miss this year due to one thing or another so we sent her a plant and card from the association and Ron has since been in touch and says that she was thrilled to bits and is hoping to be back with us all next year.
Bath and doeby and clean into number 1s (Nice to see all the ties and blazers) and off we all went to the Llandaff Institute club for some skylarking and fun.

 The last months in Hong Kong
Throughout its time in Hong Kong the Battalion had consolidated its affiliations with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines - particularly close links were formed within the Hong Kong Squadron of minesweepers.
The Battalion was affiliated throughout with HMS Chawton and a number of soldiers had trips to sea on her patrols.
Special relations were established with visiting ships, HMS Lincoln, HMS Bulwark with 45 Royal Marine Commando embarked; HMS Llandaff and lastly HMS Cassandra.

The far left of the picture was HMS Llandaff a Salisbury class frigate powered by eight ASRI diesel's this was my primary drinking hole while in the basin..
In regards to the submarine Sidon, I was on the old aircraft carrier HMS Ocean when the Sidon went down alongside the Maidstone.
Later, while doing Whaler rowing and sailing instructions, I used to sail and row around HMS Sidon when she was moored in Portland harbour, before being taken to scrap.

The first Carrier Strikes of the Korean War were lauched from the decks of the USS Valley Forge and HMS Triumph on the 3rd July 1950.
HMS Triumphs airgroup of elderly Fireflies and Seafires were tasked with the destruction of the Airfield at Haeju.
Hoping to catch the North Korean forces asleep the strikes were planned for early morning....but North Korean pilots were airborne and waiting.
