The Lochs were based upon the hull of the preceding River class with increased sheer and flare to improve seakeeping and modified to suit it to mass pre-fabrication, with sections rivetted or welded together at the shipyard.
Loch Arkaig and Loch Tralaig were fitted with Parsons single reduction steam turbines to establish the feasability of such an installation, but it was not possible to provide enough sets of turbines for all vessels.
Loch Assynt and Loch Torridon were modified whilst under construction to depot ships for coastal forces, armed with a twin QF 4 inch Mark XVI on a single mounting Mark XIX forward and six single 20 mm Oerlikons.

Royal Navy ships involved were the frigates HMS Loch Gorm, and HMS Loch Glendhu, the cruiser HMS Sussex destroyers HMS Carron, Caesar and Cavalier, the tank landing ships HMLST 3001, 304, 413 and 237, the landing craft (troops) HMLCT 1161, 1195, 1060 and 1055, Infantry Landing Ship (LSI) Glenroy, Waveny, and Princess Beatrix.
As a Telegraphist I was sent over from recently reoccupied Singapore aboard the frigate HMS Loch Eck to Batavia (now Jakarta) from whence I sailed for Surabaya aboard the small troopship Talma.
Upon the order to depart I was given a draft to HMS Loch Eck as ship’s company (crew) but before I took my place aboard her my draft was changed to the Tank Landing Ship HMLST 3504 also as ship’s company and I sailed aboard her for Singapore.

The badly damaged Regent Lion was taken in tow by the Admiralty dockyard tug HMS Rollicker & HMS Arctic Ranger on 19 February and was later grounded on Perl Rock, one mile south of Carnero Point.

 Bayntun
Henry William Bayntun born in 1766 entered the Royal Navy at an early age; was commissioned lieutenant in 1783; given command of his first ship, the sloop HMS Avenger; and promoted by Sir John Jervis, after the reduction of Martinique in 1794.
With the disbandment of Escort Group B 4, Bayntun was assigned to Escort Group 10, retaining Londonderry as her base of operations.
In company with Loch Eck on 25 March, Bayntun investigated a reported U boat sinking and, on 26 April, took part in what she thought to be a successful search for a U boat.

* On 31st July, 1945 in the Johore Strait, Singapore, Lieutenant FRASER, in command of HM Midget Submarine XE3, went up to attack the Japanese cruiser Takao, which was located after a long and hazardous journey.
Lieutenant Fraser slid the submarine under the target which lay over a depression in the sea bed, and his diver * went out to fix the limpet mines to the bottom of the ship.
The two side charges then had to be released, but the starboard charge stuck and the diver climbed out again and after a nerve-racking five minutes released the charge.

A voluntary Code of Conduct for the loch was introduced in the 1990’s, and the evidence tends to support the contention by water skiers and other powered craft users, that the majority of users of the loch abide by them.
There is, however, say the Group, much which is positive and commendable in the Park Plan, especially the view that Loch Eck should be reserved for the purpose of quiet recreation, but there is a feeling that the report is heavy on aspirations but lacking in practical measures to achieve such aims.
The effectiveness of the voluntary code of conduct for Loch Eck is being monitored and reviewed in terms of minimising damaging impacts on the Special Qualities and conflicts between activities.

After the Evacuation of Dunkirk in May 1940 the unit was stationed in the New Forest area of Hampshire, England, during the imminent threat of German invasion.
He was killed on 9th June 1940 during the France and Belgium Campaign 1939-40 and is buried at the churchyard in Houdetot near St. Valery in Normandy.
