The Lochs were based upon the hull of the preceding River class with increased sheer and flare to improve seakeeping and modified to suit it to mass pre-fabrication, with sections rivetted or welded together at the shipyard.
Loch Arkaig and Loch Tralaig were fitted with Parsons single reduction steam turbines to establish the feasability of such an installation, but it was not possible to provide enough sets of turbines for all vessels.
Loch Assynt and Loch Torridon were modified whilst under construction to depot ships for coastal forces, armed with a twin QF 4 inch Mark XVI on a single mounting Mark XIX forward and six single 20 mm Oerlikons.

 Affray - Disaster Beneath the Waves
HMS Reclaim was despatched to that position and lowered a camera 258ft, which picked out a brass handrail before scanning the bridge to reveal the name Affray.
HMS Affray had been found lying on an even keel near the edge of the Hurd Deep on a bearing 228 degrees and 67 miles from St Catherine's lighthouse on the Isle of Wight.
HMS Reclaim returned to the wreck with X-ray equipment and, after clearing part of the casing, radioactive isotopes were used to see through the hull.

The Captain (D) was F197 HMS Grenville, a converted 'U' class destroyer, and you only have to log in on Google for masses of information on her.
F433 was a Loch Class frigate, HMS Loch Insh and some of them were still in commission in 1956-58, although I can't remember seeing her at Portland.
Rob Further members of F2 (FOST) Squadron were HMS Verulam (F29) trials vessel for the sonar to be fitted to (HMS Dreadnought) HMS Brocklesby was indeed part of the squadron as was I HMS Teazer.

Shore stations called Affray all day and HMS Agincourt led a fleet of search vessels which eventually totalled 24 ships from four nations.
On 14 June the primary search vessel Loch Insh made a sonar contact near Hurds Deep, a deep underwater valley in the Channel.

The master, 170 crewmembers, eight gunners and 273 passengers were picked up by destroyer HMS Hurricane & landed at Greenock 1941 - Destroyer HMS Hurricane rescued the master, 170 crewmembers, eight gunners and 273 passengers from the British steam passenger ship City of Nagpur which was sunk in position 52.30N, 26.00W by U-75.
The tanker had been spotted by the U-boat already at 1950 in grid DC 9592 the day before, but she was steaming at 14 knots and it took so long to come into an attack position.
The survivors were picked up within 30 minutes by armed trawler HMS Northern Gem & landed on 8 May at St John's, but one men died of exposure on the vessel.

 Issue
Having placed an order with Tom Murphy for HMS Springer for Harry and Hms/m Repulse for our son, we were delighted to get a phone call from Tom to say that our paintings were ready.
As Tom was in Barrow and we live in Penrith and not expecting to get to a meeting until the spring, with glass involved the post was out so we arranged weather permitting to collect from Tom.
I came across the commemorative plaque recently, on which the boat is referred to as a 'warship'.

* On 31st July, 1945 in the Johore Strait, Singapore, Lieutenant FRASER, in command of HM Midget Submarine XE3, went up to attack the Japanese cruiser Takao, which was located after a long and hazardous journey.
Lieutenant Fraser slid the submarine under the target which lay over a depression in the sea bed, and his diver * went out to fix the limpet mines to the bottom of the ship.
The two side charges then had to be released, but the starboard charge stuck and the diver climbed out again and after a nerve-racking five minutes released the charge.

The last Royal Navy ship to visit Port Blair was HMS Loch Insh 48 years ago.
HMS Liverpool is a guided missile destroyer while RFA Grey Rover is an auxiliary fleet tanker designed to replenish warships at sea with fuel, fresh water and cargo.

Laid down as an unnamed American destroyer escort DE 78 of the Buckley-class and transferred to Britain as HMS Bullen (K 469) upon completion on 25 Oct, 1943.
On 6 Dec, 1944, the HMS Bullen (K 469) (LtCdr A.H. Parish RN) of the 19th Escort Group was sunk by a Gnat from U-775 off Strathy Point in the Pentland Firth.
The HMS Loch Insh (K 433) and HMS Goodall (K 479) of the same Escort Group hunted the U-boat for the next 14 hours but she escaped undamaged.

Test were conducted at Kilbirnie Loch, (Garnock Valley MFC`s seaplane site) with David Thurston famed US designer in attendance along with Ken Heeley the originator of the concept.
I had read your posts about it and the idea got set in stone for me. I could possibly be at loch insh in sept, if finances allow for it nearer the time.
R/C boats are welcome too (must be on "surface" frequency) Find Kincraig, 6 miles south of Aviemore,follow signs to Loch Insh Watersport Centre,(restuarant with bar, sailing, canoes, boat trips in waterbus etc) plenty of parking and camping areas, BandBs, hotels, hostels etc. Bring "Wellies".

Same thing happened a few years ago at the Loch Insh waterplane event when Finlay braved very choppy water and a stiff breeze rather than disappoint the crowd by keeping her ashore.
Shifting ballast tilted her to the point where water entered lower (open) portholes.A full speed dash to beach her failed and she slid under the surface.
Another one of Finlay`s fine models to grace Loch Insh was the Shorts-Mayo Mercury/Maia composit aircraft made in alloy sheet.
