  HMS Forester
HMS Forester was a destroyer of the "Fearless" Class, built and engined by J S White and Co Ltd Cowes Isle of Wight.
HMS Warspite sailed from Scapa with an escort of destroyers (which included Forester) and on 13th April attacked the German destroyers and bombarded the troops ashore.
HMS Fearless, ahead of the screen for the main force, was hit by a torpedo and too badly damaged to continue.

HM Yacht 'BRITANNIA' with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh aboard for Cowes Week, was given a 21 gun salute as the ships headed down to The Needles Channel.
Joined by HM Nigerian Ship NIGERIA they sailed on Tuesday afternoon for exercises and passage to Victoria in the Cameroons arriving on Friday the 7th of October where the ships company had the honour of having the Premier and Cabinet officers on board.

HMS Brilliant was the third of the new Type 22 frigates ordered by the Royal Navy and was built by Messrs Yarrow (Shipbuilders) Ltd at Scotstoun Glasgow.
At eight o'clock in the morning of the 13th, the ten battering ships of the enemy lying at the head of the bay, under the command of Admiral Moreno, began to get under sail in order to come against the garrison; everything was in readiness for their reception.
He announced the construction of a new HMS BRILLIANT with the words " We are building her for you" The Borough resolved to renew it's affiliation and this was approved by the Commander in Chief Naval Home Command in January 1980.

The loch is about a mile wide at its broadest part and between two and three miles long at high water.
Among the boats based in the Loch were two, HMS's Vandal and Untamed, both of which were lost on the Clyde.
USS Proteus remained at the Holy Loch until January 1963, when she was relieved by USS Hunley (AS-31) (Hunley was stationed in the Holy Loch 1963-1966 and again 1982-1987).

 HMS Belfast
In a particularly bad westerly gale, H.M.S. Belfast is depicted steaming away from the important convoy assembly and dispersal anchorage of Loch Ewe in the Scottish Highlands as an escort at the start of Arctic Convoy JW53 in February 1943.
Indeed, H.M.S. Sheffield, another 6” cruiser and convoy escort, lost one third of the armoured roof of her ‘A` turret in the mountainous seas while the escort carrier Dasher was forced to return to the Clyde with buckled plates.
Boom defence vessels and a merchant ship are shown astern of her at the Loch`s well-guarded entrance with the fading image of the Isle of Ewe, within the Loch, even further astern.

Her sister, which I have included in the picture, is the former HMS Loch Ard, renamed HMSAS Transvaal.
HMS Whelp had the distinction of having been the seagoing command of a certain Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Consort of HM the Queen.
They were all good sturdy seakeepers, but the three former "Lochs" in particular were very sound ships and with their enhanced armament which gave them the Bofors and twin forward gun mounts, became quite formidable ships.

 Loss of HMS Audacious
She was a King George V class "super-dreadnought", so called because this class as well as the previous Orion class were considerably larger and more powerfully armed (all centre line 13.5 inch guns) than the original group of British dreadnoughts.
Berlin made her way to the Irish Sea but a combination of extinguished coastal lights, used for navigation, and a large amount of British warship wireless traffic convinced Captain Pfundheller that he would be unable to reach his target area.
Unknown to the German command the British Grand Fleet was using Loch Swilly as a base whilst the main base at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands was having its feeble defences against submarine attack improved.

HMS BELFAST is a 6-inch cruiser, designed for the protection of trade, for offensive action, and as a powerful support for amphibious operations.
HMS BELFAST formed part of the massive bombardment force which gathered in Belfast Lough and was matched by ships assembled in the Clyde.
She sailed for the Far East and spent the years 1959-1962 performing the usual duties of HM ships abroad in peacetime carrying out exercises and generally 'showing the flag'.One notable event occurred in December 1961 when HMS BELFAST entered Dar-es-Salaam to take part in the granting of independence to Tanganyika.

Although no photographs have been found of HMS Byard (formerly DE-55 Donaldson) it is known that she was laid down by Bethlehem Hingham, Hingham MA.
In May 1945 HMS Byard was part of the escort of the last Russian convoy of 23 ships to Kola Inlet.
HMS Byard was returned to the US Navy on December 12th.

 HMS Mermaid
Her light armament and minimal sensor fittings made her unsuitable for a role in the European environment but could provide a useful presence in the Far East, undertaking what is now known as 'defence diplomacy' roles.
She stood in for HMS Chichester (the guardship for Hong Kong) at times and stood by at the end of the Vietnam War in case British nationals had to be evacuated from Saigon.
Upon returning home she was involved in an unfortunate collision with the minesweeper HMS Fittleton during a NATO exercise that resulted in the tragic deaths of a number of the RNVR crew.

 HMS OBDURATE
The battle only lasted through the forenoon but it was savage and by the end H.M.S ACHATES had been sunk and 'ONSLOW' had lost both 'A' and 'B' turrets and her Bridge to direct hits from the 'HIPPER'.
The convoy had encountered extreme weather soon after sailing from Loch Ewe on the 12th of January the effect of which was to scatter them.
They were directed to re-assemble in Eyafiord on the north coast of Iceland and although all arrived there safely to lick their weather inflicted wounds five of them were still unfit to resume passage when the rest sailed on the 21st.

 Submarine Heritage Centre - HMS/M Venturer
She had sailed from the Holy Loch on February 22nd for the exercise area between the Mull of Kintyre and the Isle of Arran, and was last seen leaving Loch Ranza on the afternoon of the 24th.
By nightfall she had failed to make her "surfacing signal", at daybreak a search of the area was made, but no trace of the boat was found.
In 1995, the wreck of Vandal was positively identified lying in 300 feet of water about one and a half miles North West of Loch Ranza off the Isle of Arran.

On ceasing fire, HMS Loch More put her boarding party aboard the U-boat to strip her of as much valuable equipment as they could, including the boat's Enigma machine and its codes.
My father was an officer on HMS Loch Glendhu and I have a photograph which, although unlabelled, appears to be of U-1024 with HMS Loch More in the background.
He was killed on the submarine HMS Truculent which was in a collision with a Swedish merchant ship in 1950.

When I flew to Malta for Suez I joined the crew of HMS Retrieve, she was ex German captured in the war, a large lifting vessel that could lift thousands of tons by cable and also ballast tanks.
I was on HMS Chevron when it and HMS Chieftain escorted President Tito of Yugoslavia as far as Gibraltar and the Home Fleet took over then as he was visiting the UK on a State visit.
Dawn Belinda Burt was christened onboard HMS Girdle Ness and the bell was used as the font.

 HMS Malaya
HMS Malaya with the Greyhound class destroyer HMS Garland (2nd from Malaya) in the 1930's.
I know he was at HMS Ganges in 1920, served sometime in the Turkey area and was invalided with a weak heart sometime in the late 20s.
On the back is written that the vessel had collided with HMS Malaya of Leixoes (North Portugal) due to dense fog but was still able to proceed to the UK for repairs.

Later transferred to Loch Ewe for defence of the Grand Fleet anchorage.
Re the torpedoing of the Goliath; the Majestic apparently was relieved by the Goliath and had protested against the burning of search lights as giving away her position; a protest that events have justified.
Presumably the four destroyers were without lights and it appears to me that a more efficient watch could have been kept had they been burning searchlights on the beam, so that no surface craft could pass them without coming into the beam of the lights.

 HMS Loch Killisport
The Loch Killisport was one of six similar vessels in 1952 sailing under the command of the 6th Frigate Flotilla and based in Londonderry in Northern Ireland.
At the time they were the only vessels in the Royal Navy to have insignias on the funnel, in this case the Red Hand of Ulster.
It was in September 1951, I was posted to her at Londonderry Northern Ireland, as boy telegraphist,on completing my training at H.M.S. Ganges.

THIS IS A HISTORY OF (LSI) H.M.S. : Sailed from Penarth South Wales Sept. 1942 destination Greenock, started manoeuvres on Loch Fyne with 1st.
Later we were engaged in some more troop carrying from Sicily into Italy.
After the landings we were engaged in bringing wounded back to England and shipping more troops to France, this lasted quite a long period.

To make my illustration even more interesting, during 1982, a british Royal Navy submarine was a few hundreds yards off a beach in Anglesey, on military manoeuvres preparing for the landing of special forces in the Falkland Islands.
The truth is out there, I daren't tell you any more about the location of where these items have ben found everyone would be down there trashing the place, however, there is one glimmer of hope for all you treasure hunters, things have a way of happening.
In May there will be an expedition team moving down to the local area, to search and hopefully recover more war time artefacts and shed more light on this mystery, any contributions to assist us would be appreciated, and hopefully bring some much needed publicity to Amlwch seafaring history.
