Marigold must have been on of Charles Nicholson's first major designs - he was only 22 at the time, but had already been working at the Gosport family firm for five years.
By 1915 Marigold was registered under the name of a Mr Ebenezer Southgate of Brightlingsea in Essex, who presumably laid her up in a mud-berth for the duration of the First World War.
Marigold was put up for sale at the end of the 1932 season and advertised with F Shepherd of Piccadilly for "a remarkably easy figure".

The HMS Barham was built by John Brown, Clydebank.
Hans-Diedrich Freiherr von Tiesenhausen in his U-331 U-boat of Type VIIC came within torpedo range of the British 31,100 ton battleship HMS Barham which was out on a sortie from Alexandria.
Von Tiesenhausen fired a spread of 4 torpedoes towards the group, 3 of which hit HMS Barham's port side causing it to list heavily and spread fire towards the ammunition storages.

She was requisitioned at Capetown on the 8th of September 1939 and travelled to Simonstown for conversion to an Armed Merchant Cruiser, armed with 8 x 6" guns, anti-aircraft and machine guns, she was commissioned as HMS Carnarvon Castle on the 9th of October.
She arrived safely at Horta on the 19th of January and was given fourteen days to affect temporary repairs after which she sailed on the 2nd of February escorted by three Destroyers and an Admiralty Tug.
The remaining 12 crew and the survivors from the previous sinkings were picked up by HMS Marigold and HMS Deptford, the stricken Walmer Castle was later sank by gunfire from the escorts.

Mrs Harding, wife of noted Jamaican attorney, Dr Oswald Harding, is a veteran of the international flower show circuit and has participated in, and represented Jamaica at major events, such as the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom, where she has been an exhibitor for the last six years.
The Vice Admiral, who was then a Captain, commanded the HMS Jamaica in 1946/47 and on leaving the ship, he was presented with the tampion from one of the secondary armament guns.
Built by Cammell Laird Ltd in Birkenhead, the HMS Jamaica was launched in November 1940 and commissioned in June 1942.

The voyage when this photo was taken, was Leith to Riga, leaving Riga 31st December 1919, with many "Russian" refugees, for Sheerness via Copenhagen.
John Dixon's grandfather Lt J E Loveluck was master of HMS Dahlia from ~September 1919 to January 1920.

 Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) officers 1939-1945
* On 31st July, 1945 in the Johore Strait, Singapore, Lieutenant FRASER, in command of HM Midget Submarine XE3, went up to attack the Japanese cruiser Takao, which was located after a long and hazardous journey.
Lieutenant Fraser slid the submarine under the target which lay over a depression in the sea bed, and his diver * went out to fix the limpet mines to the bottom of the ship.
The two side charges then had to be released, but the starboard charge stuck and the diver climbed out again and after a nerve-racking five minutes released the charge.
