Medway applied for city status in the 2000 and 2002 competitions but was unsuccessful.

During the Second World War, she was converted for mine sweeping duties as HMS Medway Queen for the 10th mine sweeping flotilla.
Fortunately, the Medway Queen was saved the fate of the breaker's yard by a local public outcry, and she was subsequently purchased to become a marina clubhouse on the Isle of Wight.
Once again abandoned and derelict by the 1980s, the Medway Queen was purchased by a group of enthusiasts who brought her back to the River Medway with a plan to fully restore her.

The Raid on the Medway, sometimes called the Battle of Medway or the Battle of Chatham, was a successful Dutch attack on English ships and dockyards that took place in June 1667, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War.
Musketeers from the Sheerness garrison opposite were sent to investigate, as reports were widespread of a Dutch fleet in the Thames.
Sir Edward Spragge was in command of the ships at anchor in the Medway and those off Sheerness, but the only ship able to defend against the Dutch was the frigate Unity which was stationed off the fort.

HMS Kent got off to a flying start, 2 minuets in to the game Kent’s Ned Kelly had gone over to put them 5 points up and with the wind blowing the right way the 5 points was converted to 7.

Her sister ship Medway missed the tide and was torpedoed later that night, Resource also made the trip.
Hms Woolwich must have returned as the war artist Rowland Langmaid painted her in 1943 in Alexandria alongside ships that were going to invade Sicily.

The events will also mark the bi-centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar – important to Medway as Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory was built here.
