The estuary of the Mersey, which is 16 mi (26 km) long and c.2 mi (3.2 km) wide, is navigable for oceangoing vessels.
Mersey Tunnel or Queensway, a vehicular tunnel (opened 1934) with a length of 2.3 mi (3.7 km), is the longest subaqueous tunnel in the world; it connects Liverpool and Birkenhead.
The Mersey River is of great commercial importance to the cities served by it, especially Liverpool and Manchester.

HMS Kirkliston has a double mahogany hull on an aluminium frame and is powered by two Paxman Deltic 18A-7A diesel engines providing a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 2500 miles at 12 knots.
She was sunk by HMS Amphion near the mouth of the Thames on August the 5th 1914.
She was eventually destroyed on July the 11th 1915 by HMS Mersey and HMS Severn accompanied by aircraft, after being trapped in the Rufiji River opposite Mafia Island by HMS Chatham.

The third HMS Mersey was the name of a class of Protected cruisers.
In July 1915 she was towed to the Rufiji delta in German East Africa where she and HMS Severn then assisted in the destruction of the Kaiserliche Marine cruiser SMS Königsberg.

HMS Warrior was a compromise, with her centre of gravity in the middle, and consequently, problems were inevitable.
HMS Warrior also had a figurehead on the end of her bow, and along with her sister ship, HMS Black Prince and the HMS Rodney of 1888, was one of the last of the British front-rank ships to carry a figurehead.
HMS Warrior is now the only surviving iron warship in the world, and is on display in Portsmouth.

HMS Captain was a British turret ironclad of 6950 tons displacement built in 1869 and lost in 1870 when it capsized off Finisterre.
Like HMS Courageous, HMS Glorious was completed in 1917 as a fast cruiser for use in the Great War in the Baltic, but by the 1920s with Britain wanting to increase her aircraft carrier strength she was converted to an aircraft carrier, as was HMS Courageous.
HMS Wasp was a British steam gunboat, which was lost in September 1887 while on a passage from Singapore to Hong-Kong.

HMS Severn was launched by shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft (VT) in Southampton on 4th December and is the second of three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) that are being leased to the Royal Navy.
The first of the class, HMS Tyne, was launched on 05 June 02 and will be handed over to the Navy shortly.
HMS Severn is due for acceptance next spring, while HMS Mersey will be handed over in Autumn 2003.

HMS Severn is the penultimate ship to be constructed at the Woolston site which is gradually being run-down as VT moves its shipbuilding operation from Southampton to new facilities at Portsmouth in readiness for the Type 45 destroyer contract.
HMS Mersey, the third vessel in this class, is due to named and launched in Southampton next spring.

We are not convinced that this HMS Terror is the monitor listed here (lots of wood around - including the deck), but cannot find reference of any other HMS Terror around this period.
My great uncle served on HMS Raglan and was killed on the 20th January 1918 in the Aegean.
The monitor HMS Roberts lies beyond Frobisher with a Large Infantry Landing Ship or LSI (L) unshipping its LCAs on the extreme right of the picture.
