Born in London to a wealthy family, Joseph Banks acquired a passion for botany while at Oxford University in the early 1760s; it was an exciting time for the field.
He was promptly elected to the Royal Society and, as a rising young figure in his field, was appointed to a joint Royal Navy/Royal Society scientific expedition to the south Pacific Ocean on the HMS Endeavour, 1768- 1771.

HMS Neptune and HMS Kandahar sank while HMS Aurora was badly and HMS Penelope was lightly damaged.
HMS Aurora was patched up at Malta before returning home for repairs at Liverpool from April to June 1942.
HMS Penelope was repaired at Malta but was bombed on 26 March 1942 while still under repair.

HMS Express struck a mine and was badly damaged, HMS Esk went to her assistance and hit mine and sank immediately, HMS Ivanhoe also went to her assistance and hit a mine and was badly damaged, so much so she she had to be sunk by HMS Kelvin.
HMS Galatea (Capt. E.W.B. Sim, R.N.) was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-557 off Alexandria, Egypt in position 31.17N, 29.13E.

Mimosa, the three-masted British-flagged tea clipper, (44 metres long and 447 tons) had sailed from Liverpool with nearly 160 emigrants two months earlier and proceeded non-stop to New Bay, as the site was known then.
The Mimosa, which usually travelled to Australia carrying mining tools, and — on the return trip — tea from China to Britain, was specially chartered for the trip to Patagonia.
By the end of September 1865 all the Mimosa emigrants were settled there.

On her way into Narvik to support the attack of British destroyers, the cruiser ran aground off Fleinver in the Vestfjord and was badly damaged.
The Axis convoy is bound from the Aegean to Bengasi.
The two German tansports in the convoy Maritza (2910 BRT) and Procida (1842 BRT) are both sunk by HMS Penelope and HMS Lively dispite the precense of the Italian torpedo boats Lupo and Cassiopea.

On his first patrol as commander, in November 1941, he sank the British light cruiser HMS Dunedin and in 1942 he sank the French corvette Mimosa.
Especially remarkable was the night of 12 May, 1942, when U-124 sank four ships for a total of 21,784 tons from convoy ONS-92 (British Convoy from United Kingdom to Halifax).
She was sunk April 2, 1943 west of Oporto, Portugal in position 41.02N, 15.39W, by depth charges from the British corvette HMS Stonecrop and the sloop HMS Black Swan.

1 dead and 45 survivors 1943 - Destroyer HMS Hesperus depth charged the U-223 to the surface and then rammed her on 11 May. 2 men were lost overboard; U-359 rescued one of them and transferred him back to U-223 on 14 May as she had managed to escape the destroyer.

SC 48 consisted of 52 ships of various allied and neutral nationalities, initially escorted by 4 Canadian corvettes and the Canadian destroyer Columbia, but the escort was later reinforced by the French corvette Mimosa, and by the 16th the group had been increased to 12 vessels, among them 4 American destroyers from Reykjavik.

My grandfather served on HMS Willowherb during WW2.

The Canadian escort group EG.4.1.15 (Lt-Cdr Davis) consisting of the destroyer Columbia, the British corvette Gladiolus, the Free French corvette Mimosa and the 5 corvettes Baddeck, Shediac, Camrose, Rosthern and Wetaskiwin.
The American ships are not yet fitted with radar and when the U-boats attack, they fire snowflakes and star-shells to no good use, because due to their proximity to the convoy they illuminate the merchants, who are now clearly visible to the U-boats.
U-558 sinks three ships plus the corvette HMS Gladiolus, U-432 sinks two and U-553 sinks one.
