HMS Minden was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, named after the German town Minden.
Christened and launched from the Duncan docks in Bombay on June 23 of that year, she was the first RN ship built outside of the British Isles.
Some accounts state that Francis Scott Key was aboard the HMS Minden when he wrote the Poem "The Defense of Ft. McHenry", later renamed "The Star Spangled Banner".

We were unable to establish a concrete link between Speiden and the Minden, but we did locate numerous references to a William Speiden who served as ship's purser on many voyages in that time period, including Matthew Perry's expedition to Japan in 1852 and an 1840 expedition charting the Fiji Islands.
This was the second fragment of the HMS Minden to come to auction in Maine within the past year.
The 1860 date on the mirror label, as well as the Hong Kong notation, are consistent with the story of the India-built Minden's inglorious end, having been taken apart and sold for scrap after serving as a hospital ship in Hong Kong harbor.

Key had a front row seat for the battle, he and and a prisoner exchange agent named John S. Skinner had set sail aboard the HMS Minden under a flag of truce to try and secure the release of Dr. William Beanes.
However since the Admiral and General had also discussed at least some of the details of their plans to attack Ft. Mchenry they decided to hold Key and Skinner until after the battle, first aboard the HMS Surprise, and later back onto the HMS Minden which waited behind the British fleet.

On September 3, 1814, Key and John S. Skinner of Baltimore, Maryland, an American prisoner exchange agent, set sail from Baltimore aboard the sloop HMS Minden flying a flag of truce approved by James Madison.
Their goal was to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, the elderly and popular town physician of Upper Marlboro, a friend of Key's who had been captured in Washington, DC and had been accused of harboring British deserters.
