 Explosions in Warships During the War
HMS Glatton was built for a foreign Government, and differed in design from any of our own ships in that the magazines and shell rooms for the two amidship 6-inch turrets were placed between the engine room and after boiler room, without any air spacing between.
The wood lining of the magazine bulkhead in HMS Gorgon was removed, and it was found that the paint on the magazine side of the bulkhead was flened and blistered in three distinct and separate places, these places being opposite the pocket used for clinker and ash in the stokehold.
This was in HMS Gorgon, and as HMS Glatton was built and completed at the same time and by the same firm, it is impossible to avoid the inference that the same condition of affairs had probably existed in the latter ship.

HMS Good Hope and Monmouth were sunk off the town of Coronel, Chile.
The old battleship HMS Canopus which had been beached as a static harbour defence and had bought time for the disadvantaged force by firing indirectly on the Gneisenau.
Reportedly hit by over 50 large-calibre rounds, the Gneisenau had her foremost funnel leaning drunkenly against the second, her foremast was missing and she was faltering to a stop in a cloud of her own smoke.

I was in the OTC at school and enjoyed the parades in army uniform, marching through the town behind our band to the fields for exercises; the summer camps with other schools.
We learned to take care of ourselves and each other and when we joined the Fleet we had a background to be proud of It gave us self-confidence, as well as a sound training in the skills needed to cope with life at sea and with life generally.

 G&S Pinafore
The opera opened to the traditional set - a side view of the deck of the ship with the captain's cabin to the left and the prow to the right.
Some good fun and mischief was had between Sir Joseph, the captain and the crew and then we had a well sung and very funny rendition of the song which Sir Joseph had composed.
A very good performance with excellent singing and acting but I felt it lacked the crispness of the Mikado which they presented last week.

Gillian Sloan (40), from Edinburgh, and Dave Rolstone (55), from Wales were arrested last August after spray-painting the word "Vile" and the CND symbol on HMS Vigilant in its high security berth at Faslane naval base.
They were charged with breaching the military by-laws and with malicious mischief.
As well as the two charges associated with the submarine incident he was also on trial for an alleged breach of the peace during a blockade of Faslane’s north gate when campaigners lay in the gateway to symbolise the ongoing suffering of the people of Iraq and the new threat of war.

He was later chosen to lead a second expedition to pursue the original intention of the ill-fated Bounty voyage, and on the 6th July 1791 he once again set sail for the South Seas in HMS Providence.
To overcome the problems encountered on the first voyage, the Admiralty furnished Bligh with a complement of marines and a tender, the Assistant, commanded by Nathaniel Portlock.
The interesting part about this ship's log is that in it Bligh describes in flowing words his encounters with the natives and provides news of Fletcher Christian and the mutineers as it is transmitted to him.

The detail of the Hero design once again I skip over for the sake of brevity but suffice to say when it was launched in 1900 there was considerable consternation about the growing strength of the German Navy, so it was good to see Hero was looking after us.
