  HMS KINSHA (SS Pioneer) - Photographs and Info - Royal Navy gunboats in China
SS Pioneer, the name of HMS Kinsha before she was purchased by the Royal Navy, had shown that she could navigate the waters from Ichang (through the gorges and rapids on the upper Yangtze) to Chungking, but the large width of the paddle wheels on each side of the ship made this a difficult task.
Within days of the the revolution in October of 1911 the local population cut off all their pigtails as a show of support for the removal of the Manchus (as well as to avoid persecution by the revolutionaries).
As Archibald Little built the Pioneer (the name of HMS Kinsha before she was purchased by the Royal Navy), the article relates to the period in which steamships began to penetrate the upper Yangtse.

HMS Audacious was a King George V class battleship of the Royal Navy.
On 27 October 1914 the Second Battle Squadron, consisting of the 'super-dreadnoughts' King George V, Ajax, Centurion, Audacious, Monarch, Thunderer and Orion, left port to conduct gunnery exercises.
Note that HMS Marlborough, of the subsequent (and fairly similar) Iron Duke class, was torpedoed at Jutland and for a time continued to steam at 17 knots.

HMS Ajax was a King George V-class battleship (one of four ships of the class), built at Scotts' shipyard at Greenock on the River Clyde.
HMS Centurion was the second battleship of the King George V class, built at HM Dockyard, Devonport.
Centurion was attached upon completion to the 2nd Battle Squadron, led by sister-ship HMS King George V. She was present at the Battle of Jutland as part of the main body of Grand Fleet under the command of Captain Michael Culme-Seymour.

HMS Monarch was an Orion-class battleship of the Royal Navy.
She served in the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet in World War I, and fought at the battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, suffering no damage.
As a result of the Washington Naval Convention she was decomissioned in 1921 and was used as an experimental and target ship.

Her turrets, funnel, hurricane deck, lower masts, bowsprits, yards, and blocks aloft were all painted a "French gray." A ribbon of gray was painted around the outer sides of the bulwarks.

On acceptance into the Royal Navy, she would have been allocated to one of the capital ships of the time – probably HMS Monarch as one of the two steam pinnaces carried aboard as guard ships.
Little is known of her movements subsequent to HMS Monarch being decommissioned in 1925 but she is believed to have been used as a dockyard launch and possibly as a tender to the Military Hospital at Netley on Southampton Water.
However, funding was inadequate and the bare hull was acquired by the Royal Naval Museum in 1979 for restoration by the Steam Launch Restoration Group in Gosport.
