  HMS Montrose (F236) - Definition, explanation
The second and current HMS Montrose (F236) is the eighth of a sixteen ship class of frigates, known as Type 23 or the Duke class, of the Royal Navy.
Montrose was later relieved by the destroyer Newcastle, and once the frigate returned to Britain from the deployment, she was placed in extended refit, which was completed in early January 2004 and undertook a diverse array of extensive training.
In October 2004, Montrose was one of a number of a ships that was dispatched to the rescue of the stricken Canadian submarine Chicoutimi which had suffered a number of fires onboard, causing casualties and the loss of power in the submarine.

HMS Montrose was the ninth of the Type 23 Duke-class frigates to be launched when she went down the slipway at the Yarrow yard in Glasgow on July 31, 1992 - the third of the class to be launched that year.
Montrose displaces 4,200 tons when she is fully loaded, and has a ship's company under normal conditions of around 180, of whom 13 are officers.
Montrose, part of the Sixth Frigate Squadron based in Devonport, left Plymouth on a snowy day for a first overseas trip which took her to the warmer ports of Gibraltar, Istanbul and El Ferrol in Spain, undertaking defence exhibitions on the way.

The first HMS Montrose was part of an eight ship class of flotilla-leader destroyers, known as the Scott-class, ordered under the Wartime Emergency Construction Programme.
She was laid down at Hebburn-on-Tyne on 17th September 1917, launched in June 1918 and completed on the 14th September that year, too late for her to be actively involved in the First World War.
Montrose was also damaged while supporting the invasion and had to be towed to Imminghamor for repairs.

Montrose was involved in the infamous SOL-BCV 314 convoy incident, harassed by terrorist attacks at stations the 26 vessel strong convoy was ambushed on the Kimanjano approaches by a mixed squadron of Manchu privateers and regular warships.

When the Second World War broke out, Brownrigg served on the battleship HMS Warspite as Navigating Officer before taking a staff position under Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham in the planning department of the Naval Expeditionary Force, preparing for D-Day.
He served as Director of Plans for the Admiralty, Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief for the Mediterranean and finally, in 1952, being briefly Naval Aide de Camp to Queen Elizabeth II, the very top of the tree for someone with the rank of Captain.
