In July 1950 "Mounts Bay" was engaged in duties off the coasts of MALAYA to prevent infiltration of men, weapons and supplies reaching communist led factions seeking to change the status quo in the Malay States.
On the 7th October American troops crossed the 38th parallel into North Korea and "Mounts Bay" entered Inchon harbour to disembark a number of the ships company returning to the U.K. The draft was transferred to HMS Ceylon for passage to Sasebo and then HMS Warrior for onward passage to Portsmouth.
On the 26th the "Mounts Bay" was relieved and sailed for Sasebo arriving on the 27th, oiled and sailed on passage for Kure arriving the following day and securing alongside number 3 berth.

This painting by Tony Standish, "HMS Ganges at Mylor" measuring 66cm x 92cm, will be sold at the Plymouth Auction Rooms on the evening of Wednesday 22nd March.
I have a few pictures of him in his uniform and he has HMS GANGES on his cap, so just wondered if anyone knew him or remembers him, name being James William Crunkhurn, or Bill as he was fondly known.
The anniversary celebrations on 1st July next, are being jointly hosted by Mylor Yacht Harbour Ltd and Mylor Yacht Club, of which I am a Committee Member as well as co-ordinating the arrangements for the celebration.

The Mounts Bay Lugger Association's goal to own and operate a Mounts Bay Lugger was conceived in the Spring of 1993 by a small group of local enthusiasts with a strong interest in the part the fishing industry has played in the economic and social life of the far South West of Cornwall.
For hundreds of years, fishing has been one of the main activities from the shores of Mounts Bay and was of primary importance in the origin of the harbours of Penzance, Mousehole, Newlyn and Porthleven.
Mounts Bay has a special place in the fishing history of Britain which is retained to this day, with Newlyn landing the highest value of fish landings annually.

The ninth Neptune (20) was a Leander-class cruiser sunk in 1941.

 SUBMARINE ATTACK IN KOREANWATERS
On the 13th September 1950 HMS MOUNTS BAY was on passage in the Yellow Sea engaged on escort duties shepherding a convoy of landing and assault craft destined for Inchon and the landings due to take place five days later.
The screens task was to engage enemy surface vessels, deal with floating mines, prevent movement of the enemy between islands and rescue downed aircrew.
On the 19th of September at 16.30 whilst engaged on these duties the ASDIC team of MOUNTS BAY made contact in position latitude 36°.55 north and longitude 126°.06 west, classified as "possible" submarine.

HMS WARSPITE was built at Devonport, Plymouth and launched 26th November 1913, Took part in the battle of Jutland and sustained 15 hits and was close to foundering.
At the battle of Narvik in April 1940 HMS Warspite to part in the Battle of cape Matapan and in May 1941 took part in the battle of Crete, where is sustained damage by a heavy bomb hit.
She was sold for Scrap in early 1947, and during the voyage to the Breakers she ran aground at Mounts Bay, and was broken up in situ over the following five years.

We were relieved by HMS CHARITY on 11th September and returned to Kure for a maintenance period and docking.
CONDAMINE relieved ST BRIDES BAY once again and with units of the South Korean Navy, we spent a couple of weeks guarding offshore islands, anchoring at night between the islands and the mainland, to ensure the security of the islands.

 Porthleven and Loe Bar
Pass the lovely cottages which overlook Mounts Bay, many of which are now holiday cottages.
In 1807 there was a major tradegy when the frigate HMS Anson was driven against the reefs near Loe bar and beween 130 and 190 sailors were killed.
This was a major influence on the history of Porthleven and its development as a safe harbour in the centre of Mounts Bay.
