The Nairana (3,042 gross tons) was built in 1917 by William Denny and Bros. of Dumbarton for Huddart Parker Ltd of Melbourne.
Nairana was laid down in March, 1942, at John Brown’s shipbuilding yards on the Clyde, not as a warship but as a “cargo liner”.
In 1949 HMS Nairana was converted to the MV Port Victor and finally scrapped by Shipbreaking Industries, at Faslane in August 1971.

She was followed by Activity, Pretoria Castle, etc. Subsequently, Audacity became the model for later U.S. built escort carriers, the first example of which was the USS Long Island (AVG-1).
Of these, six (HMS Nairana, HMS Campania, HMS Activity, HMS Pretoria Castle, HMS Vindex, and HMS Audacity) were British conversions of merchant ships, the rest being new construction in the USA (the first US escort carriers were conversion of unfinished merchant vessels).
HMS Audacity was sunk while operating in the second position which was later banned by the Admiralty as too risky.

Nairana's wartime service was focused on convoy escort duties 1944 to 1945.
By the summer of 1944, 825 and 835 squadrons in HMS Vindex and HMS Nairana respectively were flew the last last type of Sea Hurricane (IIc) to see first-line carrier service.
In January, 1945, as one of the youngest lieutenant-commanders in the Navy, Kilbrachen commanded the squadron of fourteen Swordfish and six Wildcats on board HMS Nairana.

Following the item in the previous programme about the 1918-19 North Russian Campaign, Karin Gallagher from Hampshire asked about the HMS Nairana, which was one of the vessels that took part in the operation and on which her grandfather, Thomas Bolton, was a Petty Officer.
She was requisitioned by the British Admiralty and converted for use as the seaplane carrier HMS Nairana.
Of the original six machines sent up from 'Nairana' four were ready for action, one had fallen into the lake and sunk due to unaccountable engine trouble after rising to 100 feet.

HMAS Sydney in fact carried the first ship-borne aircraft to shoot down an enemy machine, as Australian Mail Steamer, the Nairana, was requisitioned by the RN and converted into an aircraft carrier.
HMS Nairana played an important role in the capture of Archangel during August of 1918 by using her seaplanes and guns to attack the fort and gun batteries which guarded the port.
Nairana was later returned to her Australian owners, plying Bass Strait until she was laid up in Melbourne 1948.

After a period at Eglington, in November 1943 the squadron embarked on HMS Chaser, the fighter flight being at Abbotsinch, and subsequently from Eglington the squadron transferred to HMS Nairana in December 1943 returning to Hatston and Machrihanish in January 1944.

HMS BERWICK carried a contingent of Norwegian soldiers to assist in the liberation of Norway.
This was the return convoy of JW61A, which included the above vessels plus the destroyers HMS SAVAGE and SCORPION.

By the end of WW2 Britain had operated 45 escort carriers, in the Atlantic, Arctic, Indian and Pacific oceans: 6 were British built 39 US built the later were affectionately known as 'Woolworth' carriers.
The first escort carrier was the British built HMS Audacity, entering service on June 17th 1941 she was the first escort carreir to operate as a convoy escort sailing with convoy, OG74 on September 13th 1941.
Charger was the first to be handed over, commissioning as HMS Charger on October 2nd 1941; however, the USN reclaimed her two days later for duty as an training carrier.

Sea Furies were used extensively throughout the Korean war, mainly in the ground attack role (with Fireflies), flying from HMS Glory, HMS Ocean, HMS Theseus and the Australian carrier HMAS Sydney.
Fleet Air Arm Hawker Seafury y F.B. 11 O-114 of 802 squadron (HMS Ocean) flown by Lt P "Hoagy" Carmichael on 9 August 1952 shot down a MiG-15 was the first such kill by a piston-engine fighter, and the only kill by a British pilot flying a British aircraft during the Korean War.
A license was acquired for manufacture of Sea Furies by Fokker, and the license manufacture brought the total of Dutch Sea Furies to 48.

Subject: Re: HMS Nairana Hi Chris I have read the book Bring back my Stringbag and I agree with you its a good read.
I am currently reading Alone On A Wide Wide Sea by E.E.Barringer (another ex sqn co) which deals with the operation of No 835 N.A.S. including their time on HMS Nairana.
Recently at my place of work which is the Museum of Flight at East Fortune in East Lothian Scotland, we where given the original ships plaque of HMS Nairana, and we are hoping to put this on Display with models of the Aircraft and the Ship.
